Why do people buy RS Guitarworks kits?

I'm just curious. They seem to be really overpriced. I took the PCB wiring out of my '08 Gibson SG and rewired everything.

I used:
4 CTS 500K ohm pots - $21
switchcraft input jack - $5
reused Gibson toggle.
Russian Bumble Bee replica PIO Caps - 2 @ $5.99 each
14 ga wire. probably $3 at most

So I put premium stuff in there for less than $50. Is there a reason I should have spend over $60 more?

I bought one and wasn't too happy with it...they put some old "grey tiger" cap in it and it took all the top end off.

Convenience. Plan and simple.

Its a kit, you can get all the parts with just one order, a kit. Same reason the John Lennon Boxed set with all his albums, costs more than buying the albums individually.

I am with you though, I source the parts myself. I didn't go as far as the bumble bee caps or new wire though...

I only bought those caps because there was a guy local to me selling them at that price. I wanted to try some pio caps. I did not really notice a difference. Most of the time I use orange drops for about $1 each. Also the wire I use is usually from radio shack or Guitar fetish. Sure braided stuff looks cool, but how much tone is in the wire?

I just rewired my LP Studio. I was checking out the RS kits but ended up buying a kit buying a kit off Ebay for like $40 that consisted of 4 CTS pots prewired with orange drops. RS claims they have special taper pots that are specially calibrated for them by CTS. Whatever.
Also bought some of those NOS Russian PIO caps. Doubt it will make a difference.

Because they like throwing money away...

That's pretty much how I feel, but I wanted to hear someone give a good defense of their kits. I mean, I buy overpriced BKPs but I do notice a difference in tone with those. I also like them enough to justify paying a premium for the tone I like and the fact that they are handmade.
