Every time i see/hear a Mark Day clip it's oozing uber tight crunchy mids,how come i can't?
Is it some magic trick? Is it in his picking, palm muting? Style? Either way i wanna know.
From Brads Herbert vid to Marks CAE+3 to the CAE PT,it all sounds killer.
I want to know dammit!

One thing overlooked in Mark's technique is his incredible ability to mute !

I've tried and TRIED to replicate that and I always get unwanted noise in my playing that he NEVER does !

He's SERIOUSLY underrated I.M.H.O.

He does always comment about less gain.

Just shoot him a message. He is a cool cat and replies.

Got to meet Mark at NAMM.... looked totally exhausted

Cause he's a Wizard!

Mmmmmk.

next question!!

:D

Technique, he's soaking in it.

He is amazing player with just great tone no matter what he plays!

Guess I'm jealous, all of us tone chasers and he's got it down cold.

He draws all of his magic for the Cat Gods I think....

i must take credit for his gain reduction.. i heckled him for years..

i remember when i wired up his mesa rack a few years ago, the gain knobs went beyond 11, to 12. seriously.. true story!

Didn't you ever hear the story of the time where Ted Nugent asked to plug into Mark Day's rig to tap into that magic? He still sounded like Ted...the magic is in Mark's hands.

And you CANNOT get MD1 tone by simply diming a plexi :D

I wouldn't say he plays with low gain.. always looks like he is boosting with something so that is your first trick. I think the Boss para EQ or MXR micro amp or other OD (from his previous posts) and a good OD channel with hotter pups. Then yes, the 85% of it is the hands.

i know what the OP means though, even with different guitars, pickups, amps everything Mark has a very distinctive tone

im not sure ,could be the cat mojo .maybe the suhr.he has notes on his guitar that i can't find on mine.

I've always understood that it was due to his bi-weekly meetings with a Voodoo Shaman.... :dunno:

You guys are talking about me...lol, thanks :)
I typically use more gain than most. I have adapted the way I play to that amount of gain.
I am always on my vol pedal, gtr vol, and lots of hand and finger muting when I play.

When I hear myself I think I suck :)

NAMM was exhausting plus I came down with that friggin NAMMthrax. I feel slightly better today than yesterday, I guess that's a good thing.

My current favorite config is any of my guitars with passives into my BE100, boosted with an MXR 10 band(old Blue). My gain is at 7. I switch between BE and HBE modes. I have the VH switch on all the time. All the BE100's switches in the back are OFF except the FX loop. I'm loving the Hardwire DL8 delay and it's on all the time. I prefer it over my GMajor2 and my SDE3000.

More gain and less volume,or volume manipulation?
Sure there's no secret sauce?

I use lots of volume and lots of gain. I turn the gtr vol to about 7-8 for rhythms. I make the pickups rigid with foam and or hot glue, the ISP Decimator helps a lot too.
