Why does my tuner make a popping sound?

I have a TC Polytune and I have it setup to 'mute' my amp when tuning between songs. I have all new cables and connectors, I've swapped cables etc but it still makes a 'popping' sound when I'm turning it on/off  It's always done it so I've just dealt with it but never asked if it was normal

Please advise

Hmmmm. I have the polytune mini that mutes the signal without a pop. Is it the first pedal in your chain?

Yes first in line. I also had a Pitchblack before the polytune and it did the same thing

Edit: actually, I believe I have my wah first in line for whatever reason. It's true bypass though if that makes a difference

This is a fairly common problem with the PolyTune, apparently. It's either being caused by pedals before/after the Polytune, or the switching relay in the Polytune is going bad.

Try using the Polytune by itself (no other pedals), as well as switching your power supply units around. Another pedal in the chain could be drawing too much current, which causes true-bypass pedals to make a popping sound like you described.

Sounds like DC offset. I suppose you don´t have any buffered pedals between it and the amp?

Here's what I have minus the gigantic EVH footswitch. Delays and decimator are in the loop. Then it's wah>tuner>phase>flange

Mine does this, but only if I have all my gear on and my guitar isn't plugged in yet.

Well, I suppose the EVH pedals could be true bypass but I don´t really know. Does it go away if you have a known buffered pedal last after the flanger?

Definitely try what was previously stated. Just connect the tuner only between your guitar and amp. If it still pops then it's a pedal issue. If it's the pedal then see if it continues to pop when using a battery to power it. If that clears it than it could be a problem with the power you are supplying it with.

Mine doesn't pop, but when I turn the tuner on (i.e. the signal is muted) I get more background noise from my amp..

pops like that are signal spikes. try to isolate the problem. the sound you are hearing is the relay switch. try it in a different amp.
