It’s really nice for low gain acdc type stuff but damn it sounds like dogshit unless I’m running some effects in the loop with it. I have only ever owned a single 800 before and it honestly reminds of it. However mine does not take a boost for shit. Sounds like hammered ass the more gain you give it. 🤔
 
It's supposed to be really close to an 800 circuit wise. Sounds like it's about time you took the iron too it and do some mods.

The preamp could be somewhat easily modded to jcm800/2203 specs but I don’t know if it would sound that similar in its stock setup.

No bright cap on gain pot, 2nd stage is 2.7k/1u cathode instead of unbypassed 10k, 3rd stage is 1k/.68u cathode instead of unbypassed 820r, and instead of that running into the cathode follower, there is a 470k/470k divider into a 39k cold clipper stage (like recto, soldano) and then plate driven tonestack off that cold clipper stage.

I don’t recall seeing other amp schematics that use that cold of a stage as the last gain stage. Tonestack slope resistor and treble cap are also different from standard 2203, tonestack should be a lot more scooped (or maybe not, I don’t know how much that plate driven tonestack changes its response). All that can be changed to 2203/jcm800 specs with like 9 parts.

Power amp is also set up different, cathodyne phase inverter instead of long tail pair like Marshall (and most other guitar amps) use.

It could be a fun modding amp if cheap.

Some very easy things I’d do:

Put a 63k resistor over R3

Put a 20k resistor over R1

These are mods that are easily reversible.

Honestly the phase inverter needs converted to a long tail pair to really wake it up. Not a fan of cathodyne phase inverters.
