I mean, I’m mostly open to any of them, but I like big bottles and I can not lieDude don’t count out the el34 . Rick’s el34 amps are even more special imo
I thought it was the way but after a ricks amps with all types of tubes I’m all el34 for him . And I’m NOT an el34 guy. I come from Mesa 6l6 schoolI mean, I’m mostly open to any of them, but I like big bottles and I can not lie
I am also generally an el34 guy with high gain…have moved basically every 6l6/5881 amp I’ve ever owned, but I do enjoy the big bottles. To that very end, part of this is I have looked at my collection and realized that I am bordering on shades of grey and am really trying to find something that is a different hue to add to the palette …the Hellrazor is likely just another shade to the grey, but it’s one of very few that actually hold my current attention (Steavens pound cake mk2, Larry, and maybe a Mezzabarba being the others)I’m generally an EL34 guy with high gain amps, but to me the KT150 Hell Razor destroys the EL34 MTL and MC I used to have, but maybe the EL34 or 6L6 HR would to
It all depends I think what qualities you want. The EL34’s have the mids and uppermids that aren’t really Wizard’s forte anyway, while the KT88’s (which I normally don’t like) seem to play up to Wizard’s more natural forte of power, punch, and bigness. Also consider that Rick gets transformer to be well suited to the tubes, which is probably why I like KT88’s in it more than I usually do in other amps. Mine measured 680 for plate voltage. It’s a powerhouse. That being said I’d think you’d love any Hell Razor that comes up besides maybe the very earliest ones. Sorry for too long a post or distracting if I did
Hard to play other amps next to one with 680 plate voltage lolMy KT88 Hellrazor is my number 1 amp and I also enjoy EL34 amps. The KT88 is just so large it's great.
I agree with all this. The other amps you mentioned are also worth trying. I have a Steavens Poundcake Mk2 myself and it’s an awesome amp. Also very punchy/powerful. It’s impossible for me to predict what you’ll think of the HR, but can say the MTL and MC weren’t keepers for me either, while my Hell Razor KT150 is somewhere in my top 4 or soI am also generally an el34 guy with high gain…have moved basically every 6l6/5881 amp I’ve ever owned, but I do enjoy the big bottles. I also have not gotten along with the OG Modern Classic and MTL that I have owned, so figured maybe the third time is a charm in the wizard camp!
The highs are so killer and razor sharp with ricks el34 amps . It’s probably the best sound ever lolI preferred the E34L 100w MCIIs I've had to the KT150 KT88/6550 version. More aggressive, more and sharper/faster attack. The KT150 definitely has more girth at volume though. Its also about the trannies with Wizards. There are feel/tone differences between V vs C.
