Posted this in the Wizard form as well but it doesn't get much traffic...

I'm pretty sure I've decided to pull the trigger on a Wizard. I demoed a MC and the feature set of the MC II fits my needs better. So, I'm considering an MC II. However, the MC I tried had a "C" transformer and the MC II comes with a "V" transformer which Rick says is the smoothest one to date. I'm trying to get away from smooth so this concerns me a bit. So, I've PMed a couple people on this forum and the "V" transformer and MC II in general, while good, is coming in second place to the MC and other transformers. Now I'm really confused.

So:

1. What is the consensus on the MC II compared to the MC? Transformer differences?
2. Where does the MTL come into the tonal picture? Is it just a MC with scoop, saturation and depth controls or is it voiced completely different?

My MC got updated, so it'd probably a MC 1.5, plus it's Cameron modded.

But, i'd still take my MTL over it. The MTL is more Metal, plus can be toned down and cover the MC territory. Voicing isn't much deferent.

No idea what i have for trannies, but pretty sure they're not Z's.

Thread bump - I was hoping for more responses on this subject, I'm particularly interested in the first question. If there are audible differences due to the transformers, does the added functionality on the MC II more than make up for it (vs. the MC)? Or is it better to find a used MC and save the $$$?

The transformers do sound different. My MC is a custom that's a cross between a MC and Metal (the original Metal not the MTL). I first got it with an old style O.T made by Mercury....Ended up swapping mine to the "A" OT. At the time there were only A and C I think. I remember Rick asking what kind of sound I was after...he asked if I wanted EVH   of course I said no way! :) So he sent me the A. It did sound different. As far as the newer ones go, no clue.

Some day I'll get an MC II probably....no hurry cause I am more than happy with mine.

You should ask Arild (Rocker) he's had the MC, Metal, MC II and MTL I think....if I remember, he didnt keep the MTL. Steve K has probably had all these too.

I have both the A and the C... very very difficult to discern the difference between the two. AC/DC to Van Halen to Metallica they both work adequately. I'll put it this way, If you were blindfolded and I played through both amps switching back and forth you would never be able to tell the difference. Even the feel and push back is quite the same. I'm sure there is someone out there with a more sophisticated ear than mine who can hear the audible differences in the midrange etc but for me at least... they are very similar sounding. Never tried the V- I generally avoid "smooth" like the plague.
