Man what a story.

First of all, the nurse should be fired. WTF was she thinking?

Can you only imagine if you were like most people and just said ok and let her blast away in your ear? You probably WOULD be deaf (but maybe also very wealthy after a lawsuit?)

G

TL;DR - Tone is all in the ear wax.

    you are kidding right? It is called a Lavage or something like that. More recently they just call it "Ear irrigation"

no man, I am not kidding, but it wasn't one of those giant ones that have to be wheeled around. I will find a picture of one like it and attach it. I think you guys are getting the wrong idea. Maybe I was exaggerating a little when I said it would have torn pieces of my scalp off, but it was pretty serious pressure and it would have sucked real bad. It was similar to this picture attached, but man, this thing really roared to life. And believe me, it could pump out water with a rare ferocity. No doubt, it would have blown my ear drum out like it wasn't even there. Look at the picture, its similar to that. probably like 14 x 8 x 10 maybe? trust me, if that thing was hooked up and you guys heard it, saw water coming spraying out of it, you would have reacted the same way.

I meant the sue the nurse part as if it was something she pulled out of her ass in negligence.. i

"And believe me, it could pump out water with a rare ferocity. No doubt, it would have blown my ear drum out like it wasn't even there"

If she used that and blowing out an eardrum was the end result then what else would you want to call it other than negligence?

I started using Q-tips in each ear after showering about 10-12 years or so. I basically dry the inside of the ear and I don't put a lot of pressure. This prevents wax build up for me. I've known people that any over the counter or home trick wouldn't work and they had to have the pressure squirt from the doctor to free up the build up..heard it was fairly painful too so I just use the preventive measure of drying the inside of the ears after showering

Ever heard of fluid injection?

There are warnings all over pressure washers. If this story has an ounce of truth, you very well might have died.

So, what the hell was the name of the device that the physicians assistant was going to use and what the hell was it doing in a doctors office?!

As far as a professional in a doctors office screwing up, it happens. Just last week I was getting a deep cleaning done on the right side of my teeth. The lady used some kind of gel that numbed the gums and teeth, she spent about 2 minutes applying it...on my RIGHT side. SO she comes back in with the high pressure water blaster and starts doing the left side of my mouth. I put my hand and asking her to stop and said, ugh, you numbed my right side. She goes and looks at the chart and thought it was the left. I was like, "lady, you just fucking spent 2 minutes doing the right side, fuck the chart and get your memory checked*

Been dealing with excessive wax build up for years. Sometimes its so bad I wake up with about a 50% reduction in hearing. I've tried several at home treatments and none have worked. Had a doctor irrigate to remove it many years ago and that did the trick. One of these days I'll get back and have them irrigate again.

yeah, it sucks. When I woke up with that much of my hearing gone I was an unhappy camper. I always used q tips, so the thought it could be ear wax didn't even enter the possibilities. I am going to have to start preventative measures. Obviously q tips don't do anything when it comes to build up.

I talked to a nurse yesterday on phone, they just wanted to make sure everything is good. She warned me about something you can buy at health food stores. She said it is a rolled up piece of paper, you put it in your ear, then pull the paper out so the rolls turn into a longer tube. then you light one end on fire and it supposedly sucks the ear wax out!!!! she said some patients have told her it worked really well, but to avoid doing it because of the dangers involved. anyone else hear of this thing?

Cymbal are good at frying your ears in a band situation.

Staying away from those & keeping SPL's below the waist work good.

They're called ear candles. Yep, tried them this month actually. I can say there was a bunch of residual material in the bottom portion of the candle tube when I was done with both ears, but I'm skeptical as to what it was. At first I thought it was earwax, but I still feel like the same amount of blockage remains in my ears.

I'd like to buy some more and burn them outside the ear and see if there's the same color, texture, amount of material left in the bottom of the candle tube as opposed to that present when I did my ears.

I've read some reports that the residual material you think is earwax that is found in the lower portion of the candle tube when your done is actually just wax material from the device burning. The dangers can be high when using these candles. wax melting and running into the ear requiring a doctors visit and potential damage to the eardrum from what I've read.

Yeah, those ear candles do not work for the kind of build up being described in this thread. What the Dr used on me was a huge stainless looking syringe looking contraption he loads hot watter in, the you hold a plastic type container under your ear to catch the water/ wax that comes out. Its very uncomfortable and nothing you could do at home would be close to the amount of force this device generates. If you feel you have an issue. Go see your primary care phy.

yeah, the thing they used on me, there is nothing at home that could generate the kind of force the thing they used on me had. it was a lot of force. since this happened I have been looking online, and some people, it looks like the mod a water pick. they then use it in their ear.

I'm going through something myself. My ear won't pop. So it feels like I'm on an airplane in my left ear.

I had a nasal infection and it moved to my ear. It's slowly getting better but after NAMM I'm off to the ear doc. That nurse needs to be named and shamed. Thats some next level idiocy.

I used to get lots of ear infections when i was very young. My ear, eye, nose specialist tought me how to pop my ears to relieve pressure and ive never had a problem since. Its hard to do at first (and hurts) but once you get used to it, its a life saver when flying or driving at alltitude. Hold your nostrils closed and blow as hard as you can and the pressure will relieve itself through your ears. Trust me, this came from my specialist, it will not damage anything.

Awesome story!

For anyone struggling with ear wax buildup, I have the ultimate solution for you: Elephant Ear Washer

https://www.amazon.com/Elephant-Washer- ... ephant+ear

Believe me, I have tried just about everything. Recently purchased some custom ear plugs, but during the process got very delayed due to too much wax in my ear canal. I was determined not to spend $75 for a cleaning at the doctor's office, especially since this issue is such a repeat offender (for many of us). So after trying just about everything available at the local pharmacy, I ordered the Elephant Ear Washer based on the Amazon reviews. Yep, no contest. Seems a little pricey for what you get, but it works. So if you are ready to stop spending money at the doctor, or if you are sick of those crappy bulb washers, just get this and be done with it. Cheers

is there some part added to it that generates more pressure? a spray bottle, I don't know if it would work? the thing they used on me had quite a bit od pressure, although, I don't know if that much pressure was needed? Anyhow, how great is it when you hearing all of a sudden is crystal clear, and seems highly tuned in to every little noise. It was great getting hearing back. I didn't even realize that before both my ears were definitely a little off, until that morning I woke up damn near deaf!

Yep, the magic is in the tip (har har). It has a small flexible tube that allows you to get water BEHIND the wax and force it back out. I know a spray bottle seems wimpy, but I have to be very gentle with it or it's too much pressure. Seriously, this is the end all wax remover. Someday if I feel inclined I'll just start a separate thread about it!
