I need some help on a Peavey Wolfgang that I'm set to acquire...it's a "Pat. Pend." archtop model, serial 91000705...from what I can tell, that makes it a '96 or early '97, but here's where it gets tricky. It has what appears to be a factory red/black/white striped finish (frankie)...it looks too perfect to be an aftermarket paint job. The best info I've been able to find is a blurb in a couple of places that states it could be a pre custom shop promo model that was never mass produced:

Peavey produced a few striped Wolfgangs the first year for promotional purposes. This was long before the Custom Shop, but it is still a Custom job. I believe this to be one of those based on the serial number and talking to people at Peavey. Ed refused to allow them to produce a striped Wolfgang even though they tried repeatedly. I think there are only three of these.

Anyone have any insight on this "potentially" rare guitar?

I bought one of these several years ago. It even had a signature in the tremolo cavity that appeared to be Eddies. I spoke with Peavey directly and they told me two striped Wolfgang guitars were made by Peavey. One was given to Ed, the other went into a Peavey vault. It looked factory finish quality but Peavey assured me it was a fake.

The whole thing was a fake or just the finish? I can't find anything on this one (other than the suspect finish) that could indicate that it wasn't a Peavey USA at its core...what are some other things to look for?

yup, only 2 were striped by Peavey. They had black/red pickup bobbins and is like roszatycki said. Some info at rockandrollweekend.com

When I called Peavey and gave them the serial # they gave the original finish/color the guitar was when it left the factory. I must admit, the paint job was flawless but not sure who did it.

Is the headstock still the original black, or was it painted red/black/white as well?

When you get it post the pic because I sold one last year that fits your description........I don't remember the serial# though........I'll try & find the pics I took of it.

I am 99.9% sure that is not an original. While the serial number is an early one (I'd say late 1995/early 1996 based on my later serial number that was born in Feb 1996 --may be off by a year on this...i cant remember). Most of the first ones made were black or cream. I would bet it is a professionally repainted black/cream one.

I don't exactly know if Peavey followed the same process every time, but I played a green archtop proto that belongs/belonged to Eddie that was at a Peavey show back in 1998/1999 and the serial number was not stamped into the wood of the headstock; it was a white rectangular sticker with a serial number in black printed numbering. My point with that is if they did indeed paint up a striped one, it would not have been for public consumption and probably would not have a stamped serial number.

From what I can remember, I think Ed did get a striped Wolfgang Special in 1998/1999 from Valerie or from Peavey that he used extensively on the III tour....

Can you post pics?

Would love to see photos of this my self. I could have sworn that I have just seen one of these for sale on the inter webs....reverb or flEbay...? Can't recall.

I'll post a few when I get my hands on it...I have a few pics from text messages, but not great quality

I've got a prototype flame top special with the serial number sticker as well. Also, there is virtually no way to tell the date of manufacture from the number and last I knew the DB containing all the USA Wolfgang serial numbers crashed - ie data lost.
