As the title states this past Saturday I had my worst show ever. It’s taken a bit of time to even put it into words but the show ended in a death of a friend. That’s is the unfortunate punchline.
As the story starts: weeks of prep, practice, venue, etc etc….
Saturday comes; folks arrive at my home to get all equipment from the studio, Discuss the evening since we are having a professional filming crew come in to the small venue. Everything is ready as we are setting up for sound check and power cuts out at 330 as a kid hit a electric line pole up the street. Shuts east side of town down.. no biggy. Can’t get mad at an uncontrollable event. Fast forward 630 pm. Folks loading into the dark building and drinking beer. No food as power still out. Parking lot is packed enough that folks parking down the road and across the street. Power on at 725 pm. Screams of joy. We have no sound check.. fuck it. Let’s go! All good. Just doing what we do. About 2/3 through first set 2 tables cleared outside quickly! Ahh. Fight! Seen loads of times, I just keep going. Things seem to be going ok but something was off in the crowd but no one said anything about anything. I finish first set, step off the the stage to go talk to folks. This is like a wedding (I know everyone here). The owner comes up to me with a distraught look and say, hey man the older gentleman sitting with your wife tried to cross the road outside and got hit and killed!
This lends itself to 1000 questions.. first, who is it? After going outside to assess.. it’s my long term friend, lawyer, business partner… the rest of the questions I have gone over 1 million times in my head…. They parked across the street, went to their car as they were a bit older and we assume they were going home early. Wife turned around as they were crossing the street and he was gone. The truck hit him at 55mph..50 yards he was thrown and dead instantly. Unrecognizable person on the ground for 2-1/2 hours while Tennessee HP did their thing. No one was arrested. Just bad luck associated with a bit of bad judgment. But how many times do we cross the road without thinking anything about it? At what age do we say, I’m too old to go out at night, too old to drive, too blind to cross a road? Idk guys. What a fucking bummer of a week. I don’t have many real friends to speak of like most; sure acquaintances, some more friendly than others but very few real friends. Now I have one less.☹️. The guilt from all parties involved; wife, owners of venue, me, the parking lot people across the street, the 22 year old in the truck and anyone else caught in this butterfly effect. This is hard to put in words. I won’t watch the Video anytime soon. Sorry for the downer guys.

Damn, sorry for your loss. I never know what to say to people regarding death but don't blame yourself or the venue. It's just not something people have control over.

I guess I can only speak for myself here but you can always talk to the fellow gear nerds. We all have at least one thing in common and I've met some really great people over the years from these forums.

Give yourself some time. You will need some time to work through this. It won’t come quickly so just make sure you are aware and don’t put expectations on your feelings right now.

One of my best work friends passed on July 2nd and I’m still struggling. The lesson I’m trying to take from all this shiznat is that life is short. You never know when your number is up. Try to make the most of every day, you never know how many you have.

So sorry to hear this mate!

Geez man, such a "random" thing to happen, and to your buddy no less.

Thoughts and prayers headed your way bro'. Chin up man. ❤️

Yeah man. We are here for ya.
Sorry about this sad random accident and your loss.
I've lost my last two bosses now - both friends.
One to a random blood cancer and the last to a heart attack (while driving) just this past June.

Yeah it’s so weird of a death it’s hard to even comprehend. Yes this will take a while. I put it here because all of us who play out and “gather folks” can be at risk of this I would assume. Guilt lives with me regardless because of my profession and sadly my business is keeping folks alive but the inevitable always wins. I am reasonable enough to know it’s not my fault but when you have a slight part in the butterfly effect, it’s hard not to contemplate “what ifs”. Stupid game but we all play it. I appreciate the thoughts and other things to ponder while I walk this path for a bit ☹️.

That's horrible.

These events remind me that as we age we lose cognition and reflexes. At least I know I have. I've gotten into the habit of double (sometimes triple) checking many things I do in the everyday. So much I used to do in younger days almost subconciously without error, I no longer take for granted.

So many things we never have time to do correctly, but always have time to do them over.

Somethings we only get one chance to get right, and no chance to do over.

Please accept my condolences for your loss.

Wow, my condolences. At least his last memory was of his friend on stage.

yeah. I hope. We just had a meeting in my car since it was hot inside without power with another guy who we do business with…. It’s surreal to put together the events. His wife was in front of him in the road, had no clue. Came from nowhere…which is a ridiculous statement. Well it came from somewhere. I would say it’s better than falling out of the sky and being cognizant of the matter like that plane in China. Same result in the end.

I am sure he never knew what hit him. I feel really bad for his wife, she must be having a hard time. Like they say, death hurts the living not the dead.

Exactly. And when she came back (since it was hot->no power->from the kid hitting the pole down the street) she parked across the street…. Where originally they were in the lot proper. Jesus I can’t imagine her guilt. (What if; right). Forget me… I’m a friend… the family.. ugh. This won’t be a recoverable memory for her in my opinion. From the beginning of this topic, not to piss on a parade, what we do as musicians/entertainers, playing for people and gathering folks; you have to assume; at some point there will be “collisions” of bad events. Since I live in a small town, we all know each other. I would thinks it’s just better to be blissfully ignorant to the crowd.. just faces.

Yes, it's an odd dynamic, but it is still the best profession I can think of. Prayers for you and your friends.

So sorry for your loss, that’s just horrible. Condolences.
