Meh, tried a Decatone, it was a dissapointment compared to the SLO!

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I sold an XTC 101B pretty quick i had. Blue channel was nice, hated the red channel. And i had the marvel mod install. Put it this way, the Cali modded Marshall i had shit all over the XTC's red channel as far as leads are concerned.

And i tried my friends Cameron modded XTC which to me, wasn't really all that much different from a regular XTC.

For hard rock tones i think an SLO would be a better sounding amp, although volume might be an issue.

And for a good sounding hard rock amp that won't break the bank, check out the Egnater Renegade.

Thanks Dan! No intention of replacing the Cali. In fact, I spent some time with it tonight specifically dialing in some semi gritty tones. Using my guitar volume knob I was felling really inspired tonight. Sometimes I get in such a "set it and forget it" mode that turning the dials can render some killer results. I thought you might chime in since you owned an XTC previously.

The 20thA XTC is in a league unto itself... Absolute sonic masterpiece.

Just sayin',
V.

the 20th xtc is in a league of its own, it does it all, and it does them masterfully. go from metal to jazz, etc.!!

I had a Cameron moded XTC and loved it. Only sold it because it was a bit too compressed for my tastes...it was lacking that punch that you get from a Marshall IMO

Especially the EL34 model, that was the clencher for me - the bite and growl of the 34's... But hey, to each his own :D

+2 on that.

Well I have owned the XTC 101b twice and a Classic once and I will add my 2 cents .

First I will say that the XTC red channel has one of the best lead tones of any high gain head I have owned !!! Just a singing liquid lead to solo for days !

While the blue channel was not my thing there are many who really dig it , but i found it lacking for gain for doing 80's metal i always had to boost it .

The clean channel was very fender clean too my ears depending on the speakers used .

The biggest problem though for me was the note separation in the red channel as the note always seemed to blur together with too much compression and the bottom was not tight enough , but the tone was always there , but I couldn't make it work in the feel department .

And... yes , I'm an amp whore
I loved the 101B, but found the same shortcomings as you. If you really did love the 101B red ch, but wanted those specific aspects improved, you owe it to yourself to try an EL34 20th version.

I've had several 101B's and Classics, and I like them a lot. Great amps.

My current amp is a Cali mod with a clean channel... That's what you want.

Wow a lot of XTC hate. My 100B actually getts very Fendery. Not quite Marshall as the voicing is more low mid than bass, the bass is not tight so it wouldn't suit Death Metal, but is a lot more complex with overtones, the tone is more 3D than Marshall, not as punchy but more saturated.

The XTC is a cool amp but the Cali will slice right through that amp imo but I also understand wanting a dedicated clean channel. Not enough string seperation for me.

had a pre 2004 101b and liked it but something wasnt there, added the marvel mod but still was missing something. tired a 101b custom and loved it. bought it, kept it and still is my favorite amp. allot of people as already mentioned like the blue channel I never use it. just the red and green. would like to get a cali at some point as well though.

I've played a 101b since 2002, and have enjoyed it, but lately I'm considering a change. It seems a little lifeless (despite tube changes), and strangely, doesn't seem to lend itself to lead playing. Which, is strange.

I'm considering a SLO, or possibly a Diezel, or Friedman BE Marshall.

Thanks Scott. Mike is working with me on adding a clean channel. I like using the volume knob to clean things up but want a dedicated clean.

I need to do some more clips, will try to do some later today but here's a couple things:
https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=7514198 (xtc and strat leads)

More strat:

Les Paul, Yellowjackets cover

And most recently, with my brother from Vancouver sitting in on bass (lead at 1:30 if you don't wanna hear the whole song, ha):

These are all with an xtc classic btw. I had a 2001 101b and found it a little dark and compressed, had it modded at Bogner in 2002 to the classic and I haven't looked back. I honestly don't think the classic has less gain than the 101b I had, but compared to the newer revision 101b it's possible may have less gain. That said I never crank the gain on mine either and think it's more the voicing change that makes people think it's less gainy. I've had this amp for nearly 10 years now and haven't had any problems other than changing tubes and just keep liking it more and more, YMMV of course.

Every time I think of selling my XTC I plug in and change my mind....

I can honestly say I wish I had the same feeling.

I like it, but I just wish it put a fat smile on my face everytime I plug in.

+3. Just about nothing the 20th XTC can't handle and I will agree with people's shortcoming with the 101b, but the 20th is about as close to perfection as any amp I've heard.

Really ??? Is it that much better  :)

I'd like to know if a 101B with a tube Screamer, BB Preamp, or TIM can match a 20th with no pedals. For amps that are dark, squishy, or just bleh, i find a simple OD really tightens things up.

But i remember the first time i tried a 101B years ago at a studio which was kind of a dealer. The guy was telling me up and down how it was was going to smoke my IIC+ and i should bring my Mesa to see how much better the Bogner is. All i remember is the guy saying, "Wow, I've never heard a Mesa sound that good".
