Well, hanging out at Tone Merchants is already getting in my wallet - brought home the Maxon OD 820 because for what I like in a TS pedal it seemed to do what I like in spades. Trying it out tonite at rehearsal and I am blown away - the feel of the amp and the way it comes across in recording is exactly what I've been trying to mod my ts's to do for years. Awesome pedal. Probably not for everyone, it is a very smooth overdrive but the eq sweep on this thing is great. If you dig big smooth overdrives I can't imagine it getting any better than this.

one of the few pedals i sold and regretted it later.
the best tube screamer type i've ever heard or owned, and i've had a few. that internal 18 voltage doubling and parallel dry tone path makes the feel headroomy and fat yah?
drop a tone press compressor out in front and LOOK OUT!

Neat. Ever play an OD808 to compare?

nope didn't get to compare them side by side. I heard the OD808 is a little more rough sounding, which wouldn't take much because this thing is like butter!

yeah, I read about the design of the pedal - it works great! I took my head into Tone Merchants and ran though all the overdrives on this big board. There were several I liked but this one really stood out for what I like.

daneyo has one of these pedals. I borrowed it for a while and didn't want to give it back! Killer pedal for sure.....I actually preferred it to the BB+ that I borrowed from him at the same time

I owned both the od808 and 820 at the same time. I ended up selling the 808. The 820 just suited me better, but both are great sounding overdrives.

Very cool pedal, I'm definately going to pick this one up.
I've been looking into getting the Maxon VOP-9...it's the same thing but in a more standard sized box.

Demo'd by a weiner. :D

Hmm, interesting. I guess I'll have to see if I can get my hands on an 820 then.

congrats on the NPD. I would really like to try an OD-820. I have an OD-808 and OD-9. The Maxon ST-9pro looks very cool too. I wish some of the higher end maxon pedals were cheaper. I have a Maxon CS-9pro chorus that I thankfully was able to find used as I felt it was overpriced new.

If you are using one for tightening up gainy tones, I'd say go with the 808. To me it excelled in that area. The reason I liked the 820 more was because it sounded great using it into a clean/dirty amp as well, better than the 820. I think that's because of the blend and headroom of the 820.

I read a few reviews where people actually preferred it to the klon and always wanted to try one. i used to have the maxon od9+pro that also had the 18volt doubling circuit and liked it alot, wish i still had it!

here is how i used to set it for robben ford low gain breakup, with some form of compressor in front of it:

and this was how i used most often, as a rhythm tone kinda bridging RF fusion blues and SRV texas type sounds in my head-skip to :55 seconds in:

of the many tones i've stumbled onto over the years with various rigs, this is one i REALLY miss and wish i could recapture the sound and feel of.

maybe one day fractal will allow you to take snapshots of rigs and tones you desire and voila! that's what the kemper sorta does, but i'm talking everything...amp, pedals, fx, speakers, and how they sound together.
