I went to the music store here in town and on the wall I saw Gibson Les Paul Custom shop. Black, chrome hardware and WOW  !

Here is where the wheels fall off!!!!!! They want 4k and what a F&^%ing joke. Like I said.....a CUSTOM SHOP!!!!!!! the headstock on all sides has the finish/texture of an orange peel. The binding on the bottom of the neck was not straight, it desperately needs a setup. The lines where the binding continues from the neck and sits against the body, off!

The sales dude says, looks like who ever made this had an off day. Are you F'n kidding me. He then stated that it does not devalue the guitar. I stopped him dead in his tracks and informed him politely to not patronize me. At that point I reversed the field and ask him if this was my guitar with the flaws, you would tear my ass sideways if I tried to sell it to your store. I left shortly after.

Just venting crew, wondering if any of you have seen this type of thing. I mean how could Gibson let that thing out the door  ?

Saw a Songbird for about the same price. Terrible binding, cracked all over the place. Stiff as balls. Weird, huh?

A local store had an SG ($1500) and a Les Paul Traditional ($2200)and oddly enough, the Epiphone Ace Frehley Budokan played and sounded better and was a fraction of the price.

Typical Gibson sort through the pile to find a good one. I went to a small store near me today,. Good dude owns the place. He has about 15 R9's on the wall. I picked up 3 of them and they were all good. A 2000 he aged himself was  He wouldn't sell it.

Like you said.....sort through the pile. But if that was the best one of the bunch????? That dude in the Custom Shop needs glasses!

What does a crappy setup have to do with Gibson? I'd say it more reflects poorly on the store you went to. With the distance/weather changes guitars endure during shipment they all should be properly setup before going out to display. Custom shop or not. $4k, while expensive is not what most places sell them for and again that's more of a reflection of the shop. Look at all the other major brands out there, CS quality guitars are all around or north of $4k MSRP. These aren't some $500 POS LTD we're talking about. Without seeing pics it's hard to tell just how poor the QC is on this, but Gibson has been known to let a couple of stinkers fall through the cracks. But then again, so does ESP, Jackson and Fender.

"the headstock on all sides has the finish/texture of an orange peel. The binding on the bottom of the neck was not straight, it desperately needs a setup. The lines where the binding continues from the neck and sits against the body, off!"

The set up is the stores fault, the rest is Gibson's.

The setup shouldn't need to be immediately overhauled as soon as it gets into the door. If it's been sitting for a while, maybe yes, but not if it's fresh out of the box. I just recently bought a PRS SE245 and it came in the mail with a perfect factory setup and almost in tune. And that came from Korea.

A $3k-$4k shouldn't have any of those issues, period.

I have to admit I'm a little nervous on internet Les Paul purchases after getting burned once. Luckily my other Les Paul purchases turned out well.

The one purchase I got burned on, the pictures were taken at certain angles to disguise the finish flaws.

But the neck felt great and the tone was there, so I replaced almost all the hardware and played it hard/reliced it to the point where the wear is catching up the factory finish flaws.

There's no way I could with good conscious pass it off to the used market unless heavily discounted, and since almost all the hardware bits have been replaced including the nut   I figured I would just keep it as a beater.

However lesson learned, I'm going to *very* cautious buying a LP online now. Unfortunately I don't have the advantage of a brick and mortar in my area in which to try first...

That's flat out wrong.... period.

Most guitars need to be adjusted in some form or fashion. Going from a cold dry climate to a hot humid one can greatly affect the guitar, $4k CS or not. ESP's that travel by boat overseas need to be setup straight out of the box, damn near every time. What makes the CS quality guitars worth their $ is that in a temp/humidity controlled environment they hardly need to be touched.

Your Korean guitar should've had the strings loose prior to shipment. Luckily for you there was no warping of the neck.... at least not that you're aware of.

Damn, I think the store should have shipped it back to the factory. Pretty tough justifying such poor craftmanship at that price. Also, I would think that the factory should make an effort to setup the guitar prior to leaving but ultimately it's the store's responsibility to fine tune it if they really want to sell it! I mean, make some effort!

what your music store buddy isn't telling you is he bought it highly reduced from Gibson as a factory second. He's trying to sell like it isn't flawed ;)

there was a nice white LP Custom at a local GC that had some terrible binding issues on the neck, crooked as hell and sloppy. they were going to knock $1000 off. I passed

I big    for Gibson and another  for a shitty set-up from GC!!! I would buy a Navigator or even an Edwards before I bought a new Gibson. The main reason why I bought a Hertitage LP over a Gibson back in the late 90's.

Typical Gibson QC overview:

A: Well, this thing is done. Custom shop but it could use buffing and the binding isn't great. Maybe this should be a factory second?
QC: Does it say Gibson on the head?
A: Uh, yeah.
QC: Ship it, full retail. They'll buy it or they won't get any more.
