Would I be able to get Jerry Cantrell tones out of an XTC classic or should I opt for the 101B?

I don't know anything about copping anyone else's tones, but the XTC Classic is my favorite amp of all time.

The Classic is an awesome amp as is the 101B, but Jerry Cantrell didn't use either. His primary AIC tones are from an Uberschall and a Shiva.

Maybe mis stated what I was trying to get at... I had an Uber and I love that Bogner tone. I love that, for lack of a better word "chewyness" that they have. I'm looking for something a little more versatile than the Uberschall. So, does will the Classic cover hard rock tones with out a boost in the vein of bands like STP, AIC, and soundgarden.

I have had an XTC Classic, XTC 101b and now a Fish. The XTC's has great tone, but the Fish can get Cantrells tones without much effort. the XTCs really do not get there in my opinion even though they are excellent amps!! Just my opinion and I think an Uberschall/Shiva would do a great job as well for his tones.

Good luck in your quest!!

The simple answer is yes. The Classic will give you enough versatility for what you want.

Old tones or new tones? Jerry has had quite a mix of tones over time. He had the Bogner Modded Marshall on "Facelift," then the Revision C Dual Recto and Bogner Modded Marshall on "Dirt." The "AIC" album replaced the Rectos with the 5150's.

Soundgarden you can nail with a Recto. They used Rectos on Superunknown and Down on the Upside. I've seen live vids of them using the Mesa gear as early as '92, but I don't know if it was just the Mesa cabs at that point still with the Peavey VTM's. If they had the heads at the same time, it's safe to assume that the Rectos on record would also be Revision C or D from the timeline. If they had only the cabs until after the BMF tour, then it was likely REvision F's or early Revision G's.

STP was mostly the Demeter/VHT rig. I think a good Recto/Bogner blend would cover all the tones you mentioned.

Actually the Bogner Fish, modified is in that tone stack too.

Actually his primary tones are from Bogner modded Marshalls.
But yes, you can get damn close to his sound if you have the right touch. That's more important than the amp. Any Bogner will get you close if you can play like him.

I have a 101B and I can get close enough to his stuff. If you want the chewy feel, get an Ecstasy.

I had a 101B and could get some cool AIC tones with it. I haven't spent as much time the the classic.

How heavy can the classic get?

It will get heavy enough to cover all of the tones you're chasing. It's a little bit tighter, more open sounding (less compressed) and has more bite than a 101B. It still has that "Bogner voicing", but it's closer to a JCM 800 with its filtering. The 101B is closer to a Plexi.
