So, I thought I'd hear how you all set your eq's and what settings you all use. Also, any thoughts on which EL34s work best?

I find that I really like the amp on NEW and FULL (not 1/2 power). With the cleans Im loving the tip on the bogner forum, setting the volume at max and using the gain as the volume. Gives me a much chime-ier tone.

Im also still trying to figure out the difference between the 2 excurions and some of the other small swtiches. Guess I should look up the manual on line and stop being lazy! but its too fun to just keep cranking it up.

So throw a brother some tips and ideas for settings. Especially for the red channel which I haven't dialed in yet. Blue seems to sound best if the volume is above 9 oclock and the gain above noon?

The amp is new to you right? Thought I remembered seeing that in another post. Congrats!

Been gigging with mine for a long time. Tried a lot of different tubes and I keep coming back to the SED =C= and Chinese 12AX7s (9th gen?). Those remain my personal favorite. Doug's Tubes used to sell a Bogner kit which was basically a set of the aforementioned, but I don't see it on his site anymore.

My tonal preferences lie somewhere between VH, 80s rock (Ratt, Dokken, etc.), and more modern versions of those. So I prefer to leave mine in New/Full too. Pretty sure I have my Blue/Red excursions set to B1 and Speaker on "L" (loose) for a bit more thump in the bass.

I run the Boost for Blue and Red mostly on and sometimes turn it off for cleaner parts. Because of that, I keep the gain for both around 9 - 10 o'clock. So kind of the opposite of how most players probably use the amp. Bass, Mid, Treb eq all hover around noon. I've recently been kicking the presence up to about 3 o'clock or so. I'm in a band with a pretty dense mix and I have to run it a little quieter than in my other band where I'm the only guitarist. That helps cut through. If I'm the only guitarist, I might back it down to 1 o'clock at the lowest.

Hope you have as much fun with it as I have all these years man!

I'm using the following settings for high gain:

Old Style, full power, class A, structure H, gain boost on (for Ch 2/3)

Gain for channel 2 is set to about 1:00, gain for channel 3 is set to about 10:00. EQ controls are all set straight up at noon. Volumes vary depending on the time of day/place, but usually they hover around 8:00-9:00. For channels 2/3 I use loose excursion and set the presence at 1:00.

Pedals used are a Strymon El Capistan in the loop and a custom DOD250 clone that I kick on sometimes for solos.

New, Full power, modern, EQ near noon, mids up a bit more. Medium excursion. N for Blue. B1 for Red. Gain around 1:30 for blue, 10:00 for red. Presence between 1:30 and 2:30 depending on room or band mix. Once in awhile kick on the vintage switch, class A mode, or old mode for clean & mid gain sounds.

Great stuff guys. Just spent another 3 hours with it. Tried your guys settings. Thanks! Soooo much tone out of this amp! I need research tubes a bit more.

I find it interesting that you all keep the gain down on the red channel.

I do Agree that the gain on the blue really sounds good at 1 to 1:30

Ah, yes, I haven't really played with the b1 and b2 setting much as of yet.

My personal all time favourite setting for my 20thA.....??

Power: ON
Standby: OFF

Head over to the Bogner forum if it is still active. Tons of Boggie advice over there.

I used to be on there but my account is inactive and there doesn't seem to be a moderator or anyone else running the show anymore... But some people still post. Not Many though.

Yeah Tom, I keep the gain down to about 10:00 on the red channel with the boost (B1 mode). It doesn't NEED more than that for some killer grind IMHO...

20thA xtc here.. these are my recording and home 'jam' settings.

Channel 1 volume around 1pm, gain around noon.
Channel 2 volume around 10-11am, gain around 2:30pm.
Channel 3 volume around 10-11am, gain at 1pm.

Amp mode set to vintage. I like channel 2 on modern better, but channel 3 sounds better on vintage to me, so it's a bit of a tradeoff. I don't have the amp in front of me @ the moment, so I don't recall my B1/2/3 settings. Presence for each channel is around 11am. I use solo boost sometimes on channels 1, frequently on 2, and pretty much never for 3... rhythm playing on channel 3 is generally with the guitar volume rolled back a little.

Totally agree! I see you have a Suhr Modern. Are you running Aldrich pickups in that? I have a basswood/maple Standard with an Aldrich in the bridge that absolutely crushes through the XTC. I liked it so much I ordered a set for my LP Custom and wired it up to split the coils, which also sounds fantastic.

Just wondering how you like your Modern thru the XTC. Need to get me one of those! I think the Suhr / Aldrich / XTC combination makes for some amazing tones!

Kev,

Yes my Modern has Aldriches! It's also a basswood/maple model... small world eh? I agree that the Aldrich is a KILLER pickup and a great match for the Bogner...

Cheers.

Will is going to KILL me :gethim: but I havent even gotten to the Modern thru the xtc yet  My modern is Alder with the JST SSV and JST SSH+ and I think its going to smoke thru the XTC. I just haven't been able to put down my new CU24 and Melancon Custom Tele yet. I have a feeling the modern and the Les Paul historic are both gonna crush.
