cool video, thanks for posting that.

I played a buddy's YJM strat with 9's in Eb and it took me awhile to get used to it because it was so easy to over bend, make things go sharp etc etc.
Poosay you say? not even close...
Now now, let's not get our collective panties in a knot. I'm not seriously calling him a pussy I am just having fun with the notion that he plays really light strings. That said, his gauge set is varied and a 48 on top is usually found in what, sets of 11's? So clearly it works for him and his vibrato is great on the lower strings too. He's got great vibrato, end of story. To your other point, yes I have played 9's at least in dropped tuning and apart from being easier to bend , I had absolutely no problems keeping pitch or doing anything any differently. Never tried 8's but can't imagine i'd have too hard a time being consistent with practice because I don't play with feel alone, I listen to what is coming out of the amp. Has nothing to do with finesse but more with habit and practice on gear you are familiar with.I bet if you played your buddy's strat for 2 hours you'd have it under control no problem.

Add scalloped frets to the equation and it becomes even more of an issue..

I've never had a chance to really play a scalloped fretboard but I'd imagine with those 8's it would feel like mush so you might have a valid point there. I completely overlooked the scallop... the few minutes I tried one out it felt odd... like i wasn't making enough contact with the fretboard because I could press in beyond the frets.

On stage, no less. Playing the kind of stuff he pulls off. With the wall of marshalls. It's actually beyond incredible when you think about it...
99.9% probably couldn't even play a single lick in tune in that scenario with that guitar.

POOSAY! lol I take back what I said about his vibrato.. ok o it is still incredible but light ass strings account for a lot of that. Also interesting to see the use of 250 k pots... strats are damn harsh with 500's in most cases.

yeah, i was thinking the same thing that you mentioned. i borrowed a scalloped axe a long time ago. it was ridiculously hard to get the "touch" thing right...after a while though it opened up a whole new alley of tone and technique and touch that to this day, i've honestly struggled to transfer "that" over to a regular fingerboard. there's a whole world of technique out there with a scalloped fretboard, no matter the string gauge...but ESPECIALLY hard to make sound precise with lighter strings....fook me...tuned down to boot.
like i said, i was never a fan of his ego, but i'm a fan of his playing no matter the era....someone said he's a freak, and someone said he's among the best in the world. it'd be hard to deny his skills and approach to the guitar as unique, talented and skilled in ways most of us (or at least me) sat there for hours and tried to reproduce.
