Caught "live from Manila" on Paladia channel.... Granted i liked Schons sound, but does he not care that he is playing in a band? He drowns out everyone.... And does these "fast" runs that to me sound like he is just playing as fast as he can, cramming it without regard to the beat. Maybe i just suck worse than i thought and have no clue... The guy can be so melodic... But he aint no Yngwie or Gilbert. Ok, rant over.... I feel so much better now

What, who, where, the hell?

Sorry, Steve K's avatar sucked my brain out.

You miss my point... Not saying either of them is my thing either. They are just obviously fast in comparison.

Schon and Journey were awesome up until Frontiers. My favorite was when they had Rollie in the band. Just listen to Schon's solo at 2:00. Just perfect playing.

Thats what im talkin bout... And notice how he blends in until the solo. For the tv thing he was out front, louder than the singer...

Late 70s to mid 80s Neal Schon was this amazing melodic rootsy blues-based soloist with variety of warm organic tones.

Modern Neal Schon is just highgain overplaying mush with fake Sustainer feedback. It's horrible to listen to. He's just not a technical guitar player but he solos as if he is. His technique can't cut it and it just turns into a super-saturated wash of scrapy pick noise.

Maybe whoever mixed the DVD made the guitar more up-front. The mix may have sounded very different in the venue.

Thats it in a nutshell, thanks for articulating what was in my head lol... I do like his distorted sound for rythym, but im a gain kinda guy. Watching him play, i say its EGO, he thinks he is king sh#t, like he is the frontman. Sad....

Good point Nev... his rythym stuff was on par with the solos though... I dunno....

.

One of my favorite "band" guitarist. Really liked him in Bad English and Hardline too. Haven't listened to anything since then, just see the weird stories and hear he's over the top now. Sad. Maybe he'll pull it together ala Lynch or EVH.

The 80s Shrapnel shred scene really screwed Neil's playing. He went from a tasty feel type player with a great clear tone to a wannabe shredder with a washy fuzzier tone. He's not from that school of playing nor does he have the chops to pull it off, so it sounds mushy, messy & amateurish at times. Same thing happened to Steve Lukather imo. Both should drop the rack gear & go back to their old tones & bluesy fell type playing.

Rack gear? I thought the foundation of his tone is a Freidman?

He got caught up in the race during the Hear n' Aid sessions and never recovered ;)

I agree with mostly everything already said. Schon's playing peaked in the mid 80s and has gotten more obnoxious since. Given all the publicized Journey drama he's probably overcompensating for years of living in Steve Perry's shadow.

Lukather has.

Jer, I was thinkin the same thing.... watching the concert it was like "The Neil Schon Show" with journey. Steve Perry leaving seems to have allowed him to take over as frontman...

I always thought it was just me, because many people thought he was one of the best on Hear N Aid, but I just saw his hands moving really fast on that solo and couldn't really hear anything clearly.
