Something Marshallish? SLO? DSL/TSL/JVM?
Hard to argue agaisnt any of those. Funny coincidence, I ve been listening to GM for the last 2 days

Yeah, I would say SLO. At least I feel I am getting that with mine. Minus the I'm not as good as GM thing.

Im pretty sure that Gary's tone is a clean or broken up channel(whether it be MArshall Or SLO) and then he hits it with one of those MArshall JackHammer pedals, an older one. Kinda what satch did with his Marshalls and DS1's . I was lead to believe that its more box distortion than amp distortion and I never understood that with something like an SLO or a DSL which both have fair amounts of gain on tap... I could be completely wrong..

Hey Kage!

You're correct man, he does hit a cranked to oblivion/broken up crunchy amp with a pedal. He used to always use the original black Guvnor pedal :)

I think he probably goes that route, because he tends to favour poweramp distortion rather than preamp distortion.. and he only uses the pedal to get the input cooking a little bit more and add some extra cut to whats already there.

Also he can use that same style setup with any Marshally sounding amp and get a fairly consistant tone each time because he's not really relying on the preamp section of the amp to do all the work :)

Not sure what he is doing, but the power section adds a lot to tone and with a pedal, or the amps pre, I think the overall flavor is similar through the SLO as his tone. I know if I run a pre into different power amps it changes the overall general tone I'm getting greatly - even if I'm not pushing the power section. For me those transformers and tubes are more important than the pedal in front - but that's me. No argument, just my opinion.

Are you aware that there is a Gary Moore Marshall in the works?

I'm sure I heard he used a Marshall reissue JTM Bluesbreaker combo on the Still Got The Blues disc.

Ah yes...there it is on the cover.

I'm assuming the JTM-45 or the Bluesbraker Reissue are going to be so loud that I'll want to chop my head off?

I don't know what amp he's using, but his comb is either missing teeth or he's using a piece of buttered toast for hairstyling purposes.

I just saw Gary Moore in the thread title & had to post this. Roy would be proud!

Dan!!! Thanks Bro, I couldnt remember that Guvnor Pedal to save my life..

His method definitely makes sense as far as consistency in tone

Thanks for the clarification!!!

Yep, that rips!! I really like how the amp acts when he rolls down the volume. I little brighter than what I had in mind, but pretty much spot on.

So you are saying that's the SLO, ha? I'm screwed :scared:

Not a Soldano vs Marshall thing. OP asked what amp for a GM tone. I merely pointed out my SLO gets me there. I'm sure GM used Marshalls a lot more. So, pick your poison. :D

I think you could get VERY close with a Vintage Modern 2466 and some kind of tube screamer type pedal.
