So, I might be selling my rack and getting a JVM, VM, DSL or a 2203RI. Which one of those Marshalls do you like best and why? Are the JVMs very compressed? Are the 2203RIs worse and/or different sounding than the originals? How about VMs? I presume all of these take ODs and boosts very well although JVMs and DSLs wouldn't need them even for the heaviest stuff, at least gain wise. I play everything from clean stuff to broothlz. :D

Thanks for your help!

Ive owned more Marshalls than I can count and in my humble opinion , the JVM can do everything all of those other amps can. They really got it right with that amp.

As an owner of 3 of the amps you have listed, I have to say JVM hands down. I love a good 2203, but I think that the JVM handles those tones in addition to its stellar high gain abilities.

The VM is the amp I would stay away from in that list. I know some like it but to me it is one of the worst Marshalls made in the last 10 years. :aww:

JVM is a very cool amp that cover the most ground. You can go way over the top if you want, lots of gain in there.

The DSL green channel is cool....don't like the red channel

The 2203's are cool if you like something simple and can manipulate your gtr for different tones. OD's are probably needed with these.

The VM is an odd amp. It's pretty cool once you get the hang of it, but with it set wrong it sounds pretty bad. To me it sounds better for classic rock type tones. Yngzakklynch does really good with his. The MV isnt very good (ppiv type) but none are imo. Not a very loud amp either which can be good or bad depending on what you are looking for.

Well, I have to be the dissenter. I had a JVM410H, DSL100, and VM 2266 and the only one left standing is the Vintage Modern. I only found two settings on the JVM usable and the DSL, while sounding good, just wasn't great. The VM through the VM cabinets is one of the greatest Marshall tones I've heard in a long time. I think the reason the VM gets a bad rap is that (like the HAZE) people expect it to do something it doesn't. It covers all of the tones I need with a flick of the volume knob. To play the br00tz with a VM you'll need a boost and an EQ. If you push the bottom end of the VM too much it gets fuzzy. I'd use pedals for that, but for the pure Marshall sound, the VM is great.

Or you could buy a Splawn Quick Rod and cover all the territory. Sounds different, but great Marshall tones.

Can't speak to the 2203 as I've only played a few, but I think the VM can cover the range of the 2203. Different valves... different tone...

I love my JVM had it since they came out.

Cool! How do you think it does cleans and mildly overdriven tones compared to the older Marshalls?

The clean is very.... Well clean, very nice for a channel switcher especially a Marshall. It doesn't react the same as my old Superbass when overdriven, it is a lot more smooth, but can get crunchy easily on the right settings. I would say the Superbass when overdriven/break up was a bit thicker or wider if that makes sense, but the JVM does a great job.

I never liked the dsl 100 at all and It would be my last choice although u can pick them up cheap, u cant go wrong with a 2203 in my opinion although if u need a ton of gain from the amp it may not be for u. The vm can be hit or miss. The only one I havent owned is the jvm but it seems promissing as its versatile and sounds pretty nice.

JVM is what I'd get. It's the next amp on my list of amps to buy. It's more compressed than the JCM800, but it's also a lot more versatile. The biggest problem with the JCM800s is that you really have to crank them to get an awesome tone. They always sound "held back" at lower volume levels, and I'm not generally one to complain about lower volume level playing.

JVM and as an added caveat, I say get your butt down to a store with any pedals that you want to try and check them all out for yourself. There is nothing better then trying stuff for yourself

Wassup, Ralph??? Long time no see, eh?

Yeh, I should really visit one of the local shops that carries Marshalls and has quite a nice in-stock selection of them.

I never tried a JVM. I do like the VM and was fortunate enough to crank one up at GC for about a half hour. It did take a bit of tweaking, but once tweaked, I really liked it. I am not a fan of 2203. With the DSL, the green channel is all I like. I would like to try a JVM.
