Don't know if this has been discussed before (probably), but I don't remember seeing a recent thread

For you guys that record guitar/bass, what is your favorite mic(s) to use?
Feel free to elaborate on mic placement, preamps, other mics you've tried, etc.

Cheers

I just got a Heil PR30. It sounds sooo much better than any of my SM57's. I suck at making clips but at least now I don't have that muffled effect. Really pleased with the pr30 so far guitar clips.

I have owned an e906, e609 (still own), multiple sm57's, md421... Not too many but the usual suspects. I did a video clip using the pr30 and an e609 and those worked pretty well together (Fluff recommended that combo). I use an Apogee duet and my mac for audio and video clips. My mac needs updated because it can be slow when working with video.

I don't know anything about mics, but I do know yours clips always sound great, better than most.

Cool
Isn't the e609 a cheaper version of the e906 though?
I was looking at the SM57-MD421 combo myself

Thank you. I am learning. The pr30 is helping. However I did some clips today and they were a bit muffled but I was using a different cab.

Yeah I didn't like the 906 for whatever reason and couldn't coax good tone out of the 421 to save my life. It was harsh to my ears. The 57 is cool but my clips all sound super muffled with 57's for whatever reason. Rafiq suggested the PR30 and loaned me his to try. Really digging it so far.

My favorite mics for guitar?
I'll be honest, I use pretty much anything and everything, from a u67 to a Radio Shack piezo, depending on what I need, but my go to's include:

Shure SM-57 (obviously)
Shure KSM-313 (Ribbon, I usually prefer it to the Royer, a bit brighter and more characterful, can handle high SPL's better)
Shure SM-7b (a bit smoother than the '57)
Shure KSM-44a (my go-to LDC for guitars - quiet, basically uncolored)
Josephson c42 (my go-to SDC for clean tones)
Beyerdynamic m201 (one of my go-to dynamics, especially when tracking "live" - flatter than most)
Beyerdynamic m160 (my favorite ribbon on guitars - hey, if it worked for Hendrix...)
Audix i5 (brighter and clearer than a '57, works great with "aggressive" sounds)
Blue ENcore 100i (another alternate for the '57 - a bit "woodier", pretty similar to the m201)
Electro-Voice 635a (go-to for mid-gain tones - omni dynamic, very good at "feel", and not quite as detailed - no need to use a HPF, no proximity effect)
Heil PR-30 (go-to for single-mic applications - can be a bit strident at times, but has a response that is generally closer to a ribbon than a '57)
Royer 121 (I'll be honest, I don't pull mine out all that often, but it does what it does well)

Heil PR-30.

The 57 is a workhorse for a lot of guys and I like it mixed with something warmer and deeper sounding. Ribbon mics tend to tame the fizz nicely, capturing more of the warmth of the body of the sound. I really like the Royer 121 - has a really warm, fat low end, but can lack high end impact. Condensers have a nice even response, but also tend to lack punch and personality. They all have their uses and pros/cons...

another pr-30 fan here. I've always had good luck with it and go to it more than anything else. Also like my sm7B much better than sm57's.

Sm57 + e906. I like 'em both tight together on the same speaker, the 57 off axis, aimed towards the cap & the 906 straight on, a little out on the cone. Both a good 2" back. The tune in my sig is with this setup fwiw.

I used a 57 & e609 combined for a while. Now I added an e906 (with the switch in the center position) and it really sounds closer to what I hear in the room. I get most of the sound with the e906 and just bring in the 57 and e609 to fill the missing frequencies.

An old SM57….Beta 57 and PR30. They work for me.

I've tried Sennheiser mics on guitar and hate them. The 421 was terrible, e609 also was bad. Not going down that path again.

sm57 and a lower price MXL ribbon mic i forgot the model. I haven't figured out how to use both at same time.

That's too funny, I loaned Raf my PR30 to decide if he wanted one!

Heil PR30, Beyer M201, EV RE20, Shure SM7...

There are others I like as well, but generally a large diaphragm dynamic get me where I need to be.

Pr31, 57, e609, and an mxl r40. Favorite dynamic is the PR31. It just sounds great.

SM57. It just works for me on guitar cabs… Got lots of other mics including some expensive ones and the SM57 just rocks for a very cheap price.

Would like to try a Royer R-121 though someday!
