Your thoughts on Ernieball Musicman guitars

I bought one years ago. I thought the quality was good. The pickups they used in them back then (I dont know if they changed them) were great. I know they were Dimarzio's, which I always hated. I called Dimarzio about buying some and they said they are only used on those guitars. I got mine at GC and returned it. The only thing I hated was the neck. Its a 21 fret and just felt to short and thin for me. Im not a real big dude, so I cant how it would feel if you have giant hands. Other than that it was nice.

I've owned an EVH and an Axis....and i have a Sunburst Axis on the way. Killer, killer guitars...

I owned 2 EVH EBMM guitars. Had a Green quilt one and the Amber quilt one.
EXCELLENT guitars. Should of kept them. I got them when I was into the 'super strats' so I sold them off.
Would love to get either one of them back.......

Well said. I loved the Axis I had, but the neck just felt way too small for my hands. It bummed me out, because it played like butter otherwise.

The only thing I don't like about them (ok this is kind of a big thing) is I have always felt the necks and string spacing was TINY, I have pretty big hands being 6'6" so that could be part of it, my friend always tells me my hands look like Steve Vai's to give you a size comparison to neck relation, and I have always felt on any of their guitars that the neck was just to little. The one exception was the petrucci sig model it seems maybe a little wider but I just wasn't wild about the axe. The build quality, and woods along with electronics all seem top notch though!

build quality is excellent. ive looked and held only one ernie ball, but its been a few years ago, wish i could play one.

i have not read every reply so i dont know if this was mentioned, but on a personal opinion level i think that the frets are smaller than i would like, they wouldnt last long with me.

overall great guitars though, many times they have been compared to wolfgangs and wolfgangs always come second. so you know they sound amazing too. :)

After reading this topic I decided to bust out my EB Axis. Haven't played it in at least 6 months. After speding some time w/ the Axis I've decided it's time to take it to some gigs! The neck on my axis is the only unfinished neck out of all my other guitars (GMW's included) that has remained the most stable. this is also my second axis and the other one was the same way. I have a lot of guitars w/ unficnished (oiled necks) and to have one that is relatively maintaince free is great. My only complaint is the pickups have a slight scooped feel/tone to them. Other than that the guitar is lights out!

I've owned a few and liked them, except for the fret size. Are there any models that actually have jumbo frets?

I Love my EBMM guitars.... :D

I have an older EBMM Steve Morse and the newer Y2D Steve Morse. Both are excellent guitars. The Y2D is my "go to" guitar.

EXCELLENT!

I'm hooked on EBMM guitars. Best bang for the buck IMO

I'm saving for another as we speak :)

Since they raised the prices on them the "bang for the buck" thing is out the window for me at least. A GC near me has a few but they're all around $1800. For that price I'd just go get a used Anderson or Suhr.

I was actually refering to the used market Axis, Silhouette, Petrucci's etc... ;)

So you feel that Suhrs and Andersons are better than the nicer EBMM models?

The nicer EBMM models are those Family Reserves, and they can cost over $3k. I like Ernie Balls though. But you need to know if you like the necks on which ever model you're interested in. The Axis does sound great for rock. The Silhouettes are more straty. A used Axis for around a thousand is a great deal.

I love EBMM guitars personally. I purchased a fully loaded Petrucci in October, and I couldn't be happier. The great thing about the guitars are the necks, and the overall craftsmanship and attention to detail. They also have amazing customer service as well.

I've owned Petrucci's and I've played many Silhouette's and they were all of excellent quality and came with excellent setups from the factory. I literally could not believe the setup the Petrucci's had from the factory. Excellent guitars.

I've played a few and thought the built quality was excelllent. Considering buying one. If you have owned or are familiar with EBMM guitars please share your thoughts/experiences about them. Any isues?

Still have a bee in my bonnet about wanting a Morse Y2D or a JP6 aaaand this thread isn't helping....lol

I think they're really well made guitars, so long as you like their necks. An HSS silhouette will cover a LOT of ground IMO.

I owned an trans amber Axis in the late 90s, and thought it was a great guitar. I only sold it to pay off my student loans. I ould lobe to own another one at some point.

So whats the worf on the Ball Family Reserve stuff? Worth the extra dough?
