Why are people so beholden to a brand/manufacturer that they will argue with a stranger online over a product? I dont understand that if you give your opinion about a brand that someone feels the need to jump down your throat to defend them. Instead of saying "I disagree because..." its some hostile insult like "you live in your momma's basement, dont know how to play and you probably have crab lice" Jeez. It's not that serious.

Because to a lot of people, their gear is their hobby. Not playing guitar...just collecting gear. So like collectors of everything, they feel the need to group up into "clubs" and defend it to the death, to make themselves feel like they are truly using the best there is to use. Ever notice how the truly good players tend to not care what people think about what they use?

So true. I mentioned something about my experiences with Ibanez's QC as of late and it's really a sensitive subject to this guy. The weird thing is I'm only speaking from my recent experiences. I've owned several fantastic ibanez's in my life and currently own a ibanez bass that I love. I dont have any brand loyalty that's worth a pissing contest with strangers. If someone gets a fantastic piece of gear that I've had a bad experience with then that's cool. I'm glad they got something they like. You would think we were talking politics or religion.

It not only gear. My daughter was on a TV show and they put it on YT. It’s got close to 20 million hits and the comments made about her, even though she’s acting, are really tough to read.

It is hard to tell kids, or even adults this..but I always say the same thing. "If those people could be doing the same thing you are, on stage/music/tv/ect...they would. But they didn't, and probably can't. Jealousy. They decided, for some reason, to critique you. And that is fine. But I tend to take critique from people who have been there done that. And almost always, those people will give you a better idea of where you really are other than those people who have no idea at all".

Social Media has created a shift for many from primary face to face human interaction to Internet Tough Guy. As a result, this has deteriorated the skill of non-conflict resolution.

Exactly! A well place punch has taught me to shut up many times.

i have a policy on youtube. i do not condescend people. i don't comment negative stuff, only positive or neutral friendly constructive suggestions. if i really don't like something i will put a thumbs down. not belittle people on their skills/topics/etc by typing hate-text. i had a blog that was very long and this one individual decided to hate spam every post, picture video, etc. it doesn't bother me, but it makes me wonder why he actually cared so much to go to the trouble.

people are iffy. slandering keyboard warriors are spineless little bitches. truth be told.

Armchair experts.

Those who really know aren't posting on YT comments, or even forums too much, they're busy playing their gear. Which I'm off to do in 5min.

Fuck em

I was commenting on a long running TV show that it's probably time they wrap it up as it's getting stale and someone replied that they found it personally offensive I would say out loud that the show should end. And they weren't being sarcastic. I was watching a video where Mark Hamil was getting a deluge of hate and venom just because he re-tweeted a doctored pic of the original cast as they look now (except Carrie, RIP) in the cockpit of the Falcon with the quote "Missed Opportunities" it was truly incredible the flood of bullshit from SW "fans" for a pic that he just re-tweeted out for fun. Most of it from a SJW slant too about belittling the new cast....WTF. The stuff that gets praise and the stuff that gets torn down is in Bizarro world for me. YT is pretty much it for me for social media exposure and unfortunately it's best to not scroll down...lol

It’s just cowardly little people with shallow minds, I wouldn’t worry about it or take it serious. The same people would never say that to another’s face.

In the same vein of why salesmen prefer in person meetings and workplace disagreements are usually solved by getting up, walking over and talking to the person face to face or phone/Skype/etc...

Well said.

YouTube is just pretty much shit. All of the huge posters never do anything that I give a fuck about. They act like and that they are an authority and feel entitled.

There are three channels I follow.

rdavidr - drum stuff and a ton of DIY.
Theguitarologist - interesting amp modding and servicing.
StewMac - rarely if I have a repair query.

That's it.

I like Brad the Guitologist he seems like a nice guy and pretty knowledgeable. I also like that he will leave mistakes in his videos. I follow a good bit of channels but I think I'm going to be reducing it greatly. I've come to the realization that most music channels I've been watching are nothing but infomercials. And I definitely agree on the feelings of being an authority and being entitled. You have some that are obvious schills for companies and some of them it's like watching a timeline of a growing undeserved ego. There is one or two that I just wish someone would tell them they sound like a Nickleback/Creed wannabee band

Lol. Totally agree. There is another really good tech channel I will have to remember which.

Brad the guitarologist is by far my favorite channel for troubleshooting, entertainment, and modding amps.

If you drum look into rdavidr he always has cool stuff and is extremely humble and respectable.

Yeah, it's absolutely brutal in the comments section. I wanted to do the YouTube thing as a musical outlet pretty seriously, even started buying basic production gear and coming up with "original" ideas for a channel but after seeing what YT has become over the past few years I'm not sure I even want to post any more videos. I started off really early around '08-09 and put up a cover that got a decent amount of hits and a few other gear demos before it really blew up but I'm not sure now..

My daughter has been making videos for years but I've never posted any of them publicly. I'm afraid of exposing her to that much potential negativity, especially when a negative/disgusting/etc remark could really mess up a young person's self-image and cause emotional and confidence issues.

sutepaj, your first post really nailed it from a gear/hobbyist perspective.

I have to agree with the OP that the YouTube comments section has become a platform to project negatives comments towards the person posting it. I posted videos of myself onstage that I want to share with other people and have disabled the comments section because of it. I've seen the comments under the YouTube videos of some other posters and it's sad that it has become a place for people to post hateful/ridicule/derogatory remarks about someone posting their video. I've posted comments if I liked someone's video or made comments or questions if I'm interested about their videos. If I don't like it, I click on the thumbs down, and move on.

The other thing is if people post negative comments on your videos, you have to have a thick skin, ignore it, and not let it bother you. People who post videos think that they should be praised for doing something. When it's not accepted or well liked, they get upset about it. Too much politically correct stuff going on sometimes.

I find the retardation on YouTube endlessly entertaining. Everybody has a 12 inch dick with 5 lb balls. Lol. There is a lot of great content tho if you can find it. Where else can you watch rare live Hendrix or Zeppelin anytime you want?

Sounds like the op was the one offering up unsolicited opinions...if you don’t have anything encouraging to say then...why?
