I thought the same thing...

IMPOSSIBLE! EVERYBODY KNOWS BKPS ARE THE BEST PICKUPS FOR ANY APPLICATION AND EMGS ARE COMPRESSED, LINEAR, USELESS PICKUPS THAT SOUND LIKE STERILE SHIT!

:)

(before anybody starts flaming me for my poking and prodding, I have guitars loaded with BKPs and EMGs)

I like both. Definitely different.

I would be interested in seeing this comparison using a Miracle Man instead of an Aftermath. Seems everyone says that it is very close the the EMG 81.

This is what BK told me when I emailed them asking for a passive that sounded like my 81.

I like the EMG better in this clip.

Miracle Mans are a lot more open and have considerably more mids than the EMGs, I've found.

Meh... I'm not impressed. I'd rather have the EMG's...

emg for sure. BKP sound more open but I don't think that's a good thing especially in a mix, they take up too much space. the BKP mids are bloated and a bit annoying. highs are tamed as well. EMG's seem more balanced and well placed for a mix. Glad to listen to this clip because this cured my BKP curiosity and possible GAS. :)

This makes me wonder how the BKP would sound with an active preamp in the guitar.

And yeah, this pickup is definitely more mid-scooped than the Miracle Man.

BKPs are much pickier than EMGs when it comes to wood, though (unlike EMGs, which take over the tone of any guitar they're in with - yes - their machine-like sterility). What's the wood? I have an Aftermath in a PRS Custom 24 and it sounds considerably punchier and less 'flubby' than that.

this is quite true, I've tried the BKP in like 6 different guitars and hated it in all of them (flubby mess), this San Dimas Rhoads is the first guitar I really like it in

sorry, but that's total nonsense, I have about 11 high end guitars with EMGs, and they all sound EXTREMELY different, even with identical specs (for example FR trem, maple neck through alder body). EMGs DO pronounce the little differences in those guitars quite well...they still all have the same tight quality of course (and that's why I love them...but they sound different in every guitar).
And of course they do, if you're thinking about how the pickups work it's quite obvious that the wood HAS to have a big influence on the EMGs and passives alike..the principal physics behind it are the same,
this "EMGs are sterile and sound the same in every guitar" is just internet bullshit and quite easy to prove wong.

well, that does sound nice....I don't think I'd have much difficulties getting the aftermath to sound that good...OR the EMG, but it wasn't the goal of my vid to tweak it to sound as good as possible but just to have a direct comparison that shows the qualities of both pickups.
But tbh I was expecting some flame, BKP fans are easily offended, but seriously, their's no reason for that, I like the Aftermath in this guitar.

there's no one pickup that's perfect for everyone and every application, but different pickups do have different qualities...the aftermath is beefier...the EMG is tighter. FACT!
that's not judging, that's just neutral observation....If the BKP or any other pickup is your favourite for the style you play....great!
but why are BKP users so defensive about their choice of pickups? there is no "holy grail"....this video was just showing different qualities of different pickups

Hi Lasse,

In your experience, what is the tightest BKP? Just talking about the charecteristic of the pickups themselves. Obviously, the whole signal chain, guitar and amp is important. I'm trying out a few passives but I seem getting back to EMG all the time.

I've only tried the Aftermath, Painkiller, Nailbomb and Warpig.
the Bomb and Warpig were muddy as fuck (if you compare it to EMG tightness), the painkiller was muddy and fizzy...just horrible.
The Aftermath doesn't have that painkiller fizz and it sounds really good in some guitars, I really like it in my San Dimas Rhoads!
it's tighter than the other BKP I tried, but still far from the tightness of an EMG.
I know, now all the BKP deciples will feel offended and start slinging shit my way....but that's just how it is....the EMG is much tighter than ANY BKP.
that doesn't mean it's BETTER, I can understand why many people prefer the BKP, that's a matter of taste, but if you ask me which BKP is as tight as an EMG the answer has to be NONE.
Still, great pickups! I'm really digging the sound of some BKP cause they have their own character, which is different from Duncan or DiMarzios, really nice pickups!
But if you're a fan of EMG and want that extreme tightness and razor sharp attack...stay with your EMGs, there's no substitute (at least not in my experience)

Thanks, Lasse. I agree with you. The painkiller didn't do much for me, but that could depend on the guitar (a Jackson SL2H that sounded a bit dead to me). I put in a Nailbomb (ceramic) in my Jackson RR2 (body is poplar wood) and it is good, not muddy at all, but no sharp attack. Pickup height plays a major factor. IMHO, it sounds better than the Seymour Duncans I have tried so far. I have a Dimarzio D-activator X on the way. Gonna be fun to check that out. Funny thing is that the stock pups (Dimarzio/IBZ) in my Ibanez RGT320 don't sound bad at all. That is a mahogany guitar though. So far I liked the new EMG JH set best (in a Jackson RR1), tight crunch yet a bit warmer.

EMG.... for this sorta music its so much better sounding..... ive had EMG pickups before and got rid of em every time but when i hear clips of Emgs i like their sound .... damn thats frustrating
