Never went numb but have this spot in my upper back/lower neck that gets all jacked up and just seems to happen out of the blue and can last days to a week or more. So bad that just sneezing or trying to turn my head is excruciating.

Look, call me an ape, but I've been numb on my left side for 38 years and I'm still here.

It's not gonna kill you, Steve. It might be an inconvenience, but it should lessen during the warmer months and get worse when you're cold if my experience is anything to go by. Exercise will help in the short term, and my guess is that's 'cause of the increased circulation. It invariably returns 'though, with no harm done.

AFAICT, it hasn't caused any damage to my fingers, limbs or toes. I'm guessing that your outer fingers and toes will be the numbest (pinky more numb than thumb, little toe more numb than big toe).

The left side of my face has dropped a little, more so my ear, but only the latter's noticeable to others. Those are the only physical signs that've manifested in almost 40 years, so how bad can it be? In my case, I have to conclude that it's merely a potential storm in a teacup.

My only fear for you would be that you get suckered / locked into a conveyor-belt-style treatment regime that, through complications (and there so often are with these things), ended up seeing you much worse off than you are now, which is... a bit numb. Better a bit numb than to feel really dumb, I reckon.

Just my 2¢ worth, matey.

Good idea. Will your chain of command support this?

had loads of pinched nerves over the years...always bought on by stress. Never found a way of easing the pain. I get them in my neck so will wear a neck brace when it happens...doesn't really do that much really, but then every little thing you can do to try and ease the pain is worth it

get drunk..that helps until you sober up

Word, brother. As I banged on about earlier, it really doesn't seem to do any harm; it's an inconvenience at best. These days 'though, judging by the fact that there seems to be a product pushed onto us for easing every conceivable type of pain, you'd think it was friggin' deadly.

All that said, JBT did mention a major impediment brought about by this:
"it's affecting my gun hand".

Well, that casts a whole new light on the matter, Steve! I know how passionate you are about your hobby.

You need to get the doc to look you over for that one. numbness is not something to play around with - it could be anything from a blood clot pinching a nerve to a sign of a stroke.

Good to hear. Just get 'em to sign sooner rather than later. You know the deal...

Pred is terrible for you just FYI. Doctors prescribe it way too easily IMO.

Also, it sounds a compressed nerve. I had severe spinal stenosis + DDD from the time I was 17 until about last year. Just got insanely lucky and somehow improved.

Also sounds like a sciatica issue btw. Get a super hard + spiked foam roller and go to down, then roll your IT band, etc... with a lacrosse ball super aggressively. Do both those things 2x - 3x a day for 15 min and you might feel better. Worked wonders for me.

Good luck!

Ah makes sense. Yeah I have a few herniated discs too.

If you have SS it's actually a lot more treatable than doctors say it is because I think they are used to dealing with lazy patients. :D

well like a dumbass i started working out this morning...weights and cardio. by the time i left the training center and got on station i could tell the numbness and weakness had increased. call me crazy but it is motivating me to keep hitting it. just going super light with reps, one muscle group a day. started with legs today. drinking nothing but water and staying away from any processed foods. see if i can get the inflammation down that way. at this rate i should be paralyzed by saturday...

You should experiment adding one exercise at a time to figure out what aggravates it otherwise you'll end up worsening your situation.

I can do things like bench pretty heavy now but I can't squad or do deads since those immediately trigger symptoms.

I had some disc bulging thing in my neck that started last summer.. August 2017. Only my thumb went numb but I had very annoying pain in my shoulder and I lost some strength in my right arm... very obvious when I played guitar, I am very obsessive about picking speed and I watched it going down drastically as I struggled with strength and pick feel in my thumb... not nice. I couldn't even lay down on the floor for more than 2 minutes without end up in pain.

Just as it came, it started to go away at the beginning of the year.. totally gone now.

I tried exercises, bogus chiropractors ( I really discourage going there, it's a waste of time/money), rest and all the above mixed.
I used a neck collar most of the day in the last period, also did small things such as raise my monitor at work so my head will always point straight or even slightly up.

Hard to say what really fixed it, but it did coincide with a period when I was simply tired of it all and gave it total rest.

good luck

I'm going thru the same thing now. herniated disc c4/c5 and compressed nerve. I have lost some strength in my left hand, having trouble fretting chords and I see a huge difference in my playing . 10 minutes and I'm done due to the pain.
I also have the extreme shoulder pain when I lay down. Went thru 35 minutes of an MRI like that. REALLY SUCKED.
Have another appointment this week with a sports spine specialist. hopefully get a shot and back to normal.
I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

well just got out of the hospital.....fuck what an ordeal. they think i have transverse meilitis or possible onset of m.s., they also have their geek squad working on other shit also..eg-cat scratch fever, exposure to TB....etc....there's a spot on the left side of my brain and a lesion on my spinal cord. They had me on stroke protocal till they ruled that out.

Going to be honest, None of what you typed from that ordeal sounds preliminarily good. Hoping they're able to get down to the bottom of this. Numbness can indeed be a sign of (among many other things) a stroke, and can also affect speech. The important part is that they at least find out what's going on and go from there. Positive thoughts they're able to find a diagnosis promptly and it's something easily treatable.

exposed to TB on the job? Sounds like a lawsuit involving OSHA?

Dang, I hope it ends up being something relatively easy to treat.

I was exposed to TB on the job. It came up on a routine physical when I had a reaction to the TB Tine skin test about 15 years ago. Had to take Isoniazid pills every day for 6 months, but all was good after that. Hope it's an easy fix, brother.

Damn, I haven't even heard about TB since I was vaccinated for it as a kid back in the 70s. I hope everything works out for you JBT.

yep- they are starting me next week.....9 month treatment. at work they say "don't worry about it, you've just been exposed-you don't have it...". well guess what? you do have it. it's latent and eventually sometime in your life it will become active. and in the meantime it can do strange things to your body. I've done transport for 18 years...took a guy out once and sat on him in the hospital and at the end of the shift we found out he was active tb. we were sucking his infected fumes for almost 8 hours.....
