I dont wanted to litter FourT6and2 topic further, so i am creating new one, dedicated strictly to my build. After succesful run and some tweaks i will upload schema of this project and some video samples.

Okay so main arrangements:
- 50W
- tube fx loop
- 1 gain knob
- clipping style selector
- master volume after tone stack and fx loop
- rather brown voltages
- AC heated tubes + maybe elevation to DC
- one channel
- mustards

Current progress:

Nice.

What's up with the 4th tube socket? You doing an extra gain stage? Ideally you want V1 to be the very last in line for the heater string. Right now you've got that tube piggybacking off V1.

Thanks!

Fourth tube is for buffering and recovery stage of fx loop. About heating chain - good point, im a bit aware of it too. If it will cause some problems with hum i will rearrange it, and maybe elevate to DC.

Cheers!

Okay, your suggestion forced me to rethink this arrangement, and I decided to fix it right now - cause later it will be extermely hard to modify in the jungle of other wires.

Meanwhile i progressed a bit too.

Hmmm... if it were me, I'd probably go from the PI to that other socket and then from the PI to the CF instead of running two heater chains under the preamp board. But it might work out ok the way you have it. Fingers crossed :)

But this is actually just as you said:) There is one heating chain from power tubes to PI and then to this extra socket, and from extra socket to the rest of preamp. Second line is wired only for indicator. Cheers!

Hah, now i see you meant different arrangement, hope this will work just fine! Preamp board is pretty high, and heating wires are passing just under preamp filtering section (100uF) of board

Agreed. No need to run a set of wires back, just go from the PI tube to the loop and V2.

Yestarday was an amp day, so there is a progress: Main F&T filter caps, further board filling, some minor updates etc. It is finally starting to look like an amp

Cheers!

Why not mount them on the underside of the chassis?

V2a - i wanted to sav some space inside chassis, what's more - holes were to small.

Okay next episode - i had some troblems with Power Transformer - manufacturer swapped accidentally 0V and 60V taps, and i was grounding 60V. Voltage on main filter was 515V on standby, so I decided to decrease it by 51V by simple MOSFET/zener circuit called 'B+ reducer'. Now i have about 465V on standby, which is nice!

So, to sum it up - Power supply is almost finished, main filter is working good, bias supply too (-35V to -65V). I've also moved a bit heating line so now it is passing just under 80uF preamp cap.

Thanks, me too! Althrough i didn't thought that this chassis will be so small - it is so hard to organize it! Ceriatone ones are bigger and better.

Okay guys i did it, sounds huge, bit more aggresive and open than my XTC clone. I didnt have el34 tubes, so i ran it exceptionally on 6l6GC Mesa tubes. I was bit afraid about noise due to the unusual heaters wiring pattern but it is super quiet.

Unfortunately it also turned out that my PT is too weak for this configutarion, and after ~1h of playing it is getting hot, I didnt measured temperature, but i can hold my finger (even making some pressure) on it for 10 or more seconds. I am afraid that in el34 situation it will be even worse. Maybe i will buy InMadOut Plexi 50W replacement trannie.

PSU voltages:
6l6GC Plates: 440V
6l6GC grids: 439V
PI: 320V
Fx loop: 305V
Preamp 1: 282V
Preamp 2: 270V
Bias: 40mA

Guts and samples:

Thanks guys! I am really happy, cause it has very different character than my xtc copy - more open, aggresive, riffs are super tight! XTC is more melodic, compressed, bit muddier (but in the way that i absolutely love).

The only problem is this transformer, or maybe i am overreacting a bit. It is definately getting hot after ~1h of playing. I can grab it and hold even for >10sec, of course it is not pleasant but it definately cannot burn my skin. I also noticed that it does not depend on load - with all preamp tubes pulled off it is still getting hot.

It is just a 5yo transformer ordered according to my specifications in small local manufacturer. I already ordered another, much better one in much better firm ;)

Recently, I also tweaked a bit preamp section and tested some other clipping options:

- MPSA06 with additional 2.2k resistor in series to ground - for me too aggresive, but i guess for metal its totally awesome :)
- 14V zener - too aggresive - a lot of large grain which i hate (like with 10V zeners)
- 27V ! - love it, classic hot rodded rock tone with a bit of saturation, easy to boost for more liquid lead sound, definately will keep it as one of 3 options.

Maybe i will try also something like 30-33V zeners, cause direction is obviously right!

Current clipping setup: None/27V/20V

Anything higher than that and you might as well not bother. In my builds 24v is too high. You can get to the same place just by turning up the gain. I think 18v is the sweet spot for all-around clipping. And then MPSA06 for modern sounds.

Thanks for precious advices!

I agree with MPSA06 for modern sounds - i have very similar feeling.

When it comes to my 27V - volume sag is definitely noticeable, also character of distortion is different (than without clipping). Maybe it depends on preamp and MV configuration more than i was suspecting. Untill now, I really like 27V diode, but 20V is very interesting too.

I will write here schema, but i must find some spare time ;) I am also planning to record some more samples, maybe louder, with better quality.

Okay, i've finally decided about clipping style: none/15V zener/MPSA06

Why? I was aware that changing temporary 6l6gs's into el34 JJ (cause i'am using 100% typical plexi inverter power amp style) will cause some noticeable changes mainly in presence/depth circuit, due to much bigger amount of negative feedback with el34, but in this case changes were even more perceptible. Now amp is less aggresive, definately less gainy, but still very open sounding. And that is why now i see why everything above 20-22V zener is basically pointless. I found that now 15-18V zener gives me desirable amount of distortion, and to obtain more modern 90's sounds MPSA06 is the best.

Finally after implementing el34's and adjusting clipping circuits amp is still open sounding, less fizzy and compressed just enough for my taste, and quite as hell (in terms of noices) i am really happy, and starting to like it even a bit more than my xtc copy

Okay, another post of my monologue ;)

I am attaching final result of my build, after some tweaks and with el34 JJ power tubes. Boosted by 12db clean boost to make it more liquid

Enjoy and share your impressions!

Sounds great.

Do you have an caps across the gain pot? I can’t see any?

Yep, there is one: 2n2, but most of the time it is 'turned off' cause i am cranking gain pretty hard.

One more question. What snubbers are you using? 500pf? I like to use real small ones... for example my JCA has 47pf. I find using something too big like 500pf makes the high end roll off too much.

Hi!

I am using 220-500p snubbers cause i like rather dark and fat sounding amps (but bright enough to cut through mix ;)), and 100p in phase inverter.

Yeah, that is right, i've had few other tremolos including floyd rose, and here it is a whole different story, different feel, more user friendly, and let's say melodic - in terms of 'pitch changing liquidity', dont know how to call it

That is a good term actually.

It's it's own beast really. I need a real floyd or edge most of the time tbh, but it's better than any non-locker I have ever played. But yeah they are cool AF. I wish you could get just the bridge for a build.

Congratulations on your build! Great craftmanship, great sound and great playing.
Can I ask you about the eyelets you used on the board? Im curious as I would like to be able to avoid using regular turrets.
Also, what type of resistor did you use on the preamp? Cheers!

Thanks a lot!

I bought this eyelets in my Polish amp-parts store, here: https://amptone.pl/p/65/317/eyelet-eyl68-10pcs-.html

About resistors: These are Metal Film Dale CCF60's. My first choice since allways

Very nice work there sir!

Yeah, those CCF60's are

I've got a build going right now using 1watt PRP's for the first time, so we'll see how they stack up, but I love those CCF60's.

Funny though, the last batch of CCF60's I got from Mouser were just light brown with the values written on them - no coloured bands.
It looks like a rabbit took a dump in my amp.....

Thanks again. Im after first gig with this head, and it is cutting really well!

About CCF60 - maybe they are changing appereance, in fact i am allways checking value of resistors by multimeter, cause i dont trust myself when indentifying them by stripes

What is more, i've decided to boost it finally with a decent unit, and i've builded clone of Barber Direct Drive (the one with internal trims for presence and bass). On recent sample i was using just a silmpe cleanboost, now with direct drive i was able to controll final shape and presence of sound. To compare it, i recorded once again the same solo. Now to my taste, sound is much more clean and 'in-your-face'.

Thanks for that info! I'll try to find the eyelets here in the US. Probably a silly question but do you have to stake them to the board or do they just stay with pressure?
The CCF60s over here are all brown, no colour coding on them. Too bad.
Cheers,
M.
