Boss Katana

I know the head is getting a ton of love, but does anyone have experience with the Katana 50 1x12? Sold my Peavey Vypyr and looking to get another small practice amp while saving up for an Archon or something similar. Don't have a cab atm, so the head is out of the question. Just curious if the Katana 50 will be a big letdown since everyone is raving about the head.

I had a Marshall valvestate back in the day which I thought sounded pretty damn good... I don't knock everything solid state. Besides, lots of tube amps also flub out if you crank the master.

We'll, I'll be damned. This thing is very impressive.

It most certainly isn't going to replace my Cherry Bomb or Mark IIC+, but it sounds and feels REALLY good. And for the price point, I think it sounds amazing.

I haven't even put an MXR 10 band in the loop yet.....which is the secret sauce for my sound with every amp and I got it dialed in to a tone that sounds like "me" in just a few minutes.

Highly recommend this thing.

One last point.....I would be happy to gig with this thing in a heartbeat if I were still gigging. It is much better than several amps that I did gig with

Wow.

Now plug that eq in the loop. This amp will melt your face off. :D

Kapo, I had one of those old Valvestates back in the day too. It honestly kicked some serious ass for what it was.

What are you all doing with the eq settings? I'd like to melt face too
I imagine a little smile mid scoop?
Is it way better than just using the same settings in the para eq in the amp software?

The honeymoon is over and I have had extensive time to AB against my tube amps and axe fx 2, its not a tube amp, my diezels and my axe fx both still sound better than it. Not ten times better however as is the cost.

The real amps AND the axe have a 3d depth katana does not. katana also has a VERY bright and aggressive high mid voicing that takes a bunch of EQ to tame. I hadn't really noticed HOW bright until I started AB-ing.

Ill be keeping katana, its GREAT as a practice amp, for quick demo recordings and as a grab and go gigging backup. It wont replace anything for me but adds another tool to the arsenal.

I kind of feel the same when comparing with my Axe II. The Axe still sounds much clearer, and complex. However, it is also much easier to dial it in to sound horrible. I like the Katana because it is easy to just flip on an jam on. It is just a lot of fun, and sounds and feels good for what it is. It is much easier and faster to jam on than the Axe rig, or the tube stuff. I also like that I can use my pedals with it. It responds very well to boosts.

I also agree it definitely has a high end crispyness to it. I have been using the para EQ to notch out some at 3.1khz. On one hand I like it. It adds an aggressiveness that is hard to get on the Axe, but it can get fatiguing after awhile.

I just ordered the KTN50 (50 single 12 combo). $199 bucks for something that sounds that damn good is a winner in my opinion. This'll be my practice amp with no gran illusions of it sounding better than my bogner/vht/mesa rigs. Just a kick ass combo for practice and writing.

Used the head at a casino gig tonight. Here's a quick clip of it using the "Line Out" signal to FOH. was hoping to use the recording Out which is stereo but soundguy didn't have the right adapters.

I think it sounds decent...

Sounds pretty cool but Im wondering and have to to figure out the differences between line out and record out. Looking at the block diagram it seems neither has power amp tone unlesa the dsp does something and I cannot figure out if the record out has cabinet eq either.

The literature is horrible. Cant find frequency centers for the eq knobs, for the high and low eq parameters and MANY other questions. The documentarion is piss poor.

I believe the record out is stereo and line out is mono. I'll try and do some direct comparison.

I can't speak to the para EQ in the amp because I haven't used it yet, but I do love para EQ! My PQ6 is one of my prize possessions

However, I put an MXR 10 Band in the loop of every amp I play....for the past several years. It adds a special " something" to my ears to the tone.

On some amps, I leave everything flat, but on most, I drop the 500 a tad and the 1000 about half what I drop the 500. I've found that these two sliders on this EQ...for me...are where the magic happens. Some amps need more and some amps need less.

I tend to stay away from the classic frown because I'm not really looking for scooped tone.

Oh...I will my friend!

I have one in the loop of my Cherry Bomb and the loop of my IIC+....not pulling them, so I ordered another and it will most certainly go in the loop of the Katana. I fully intend to melt faces :rawk:

On a side note, I bought my daughter a fender modeling amp combo when she first picked up a guitar (she is 9) a while back.....like I said, this amp is not going to replace my tube amps, but it is specfuckingtacular for what it is....whether she gets this one or I buy another for her, this is the amp she will be using (spoiled kids will never understand the journey from Gorilla to Crate to Peavey, etc, etc. to something that sounds great.....they can get great right out of the gate at a great price!)
