I’m looking to replace the stock pickups in a Gibson Flying V (496R and 500T). It’s an all mahogany body, rosewood fingerboard. I’ll be playing through a Diezel Herbert. The sound I am looking for is varied, but firmly in the metal family tree - I’d like to span the gamut from booming, sludgy stoner metal to tight, pummeling melodic death metal. I’d also like a sweet clean tone for atmospheric, psychedelic stuff - fine if it’s only from the neck pickup.

Tim from BKP recommends the ceramic Nailbomb as an excellent choice for stoner metal, but able to do tighter stuff with the ceramic. Pairing this with a cold sweat neck sounds like a really strong choice, but I want to consider my options fully.

The ceramic warpig sounds brutal in BKP’s clips. The bass response of the painkiller sounds good on paper. I like the bright harmonic rich sound of the rebel yell. And the black dogs have something really appealing about their crunch, in spite of their relatively lower output.

What BKP are people about these days?

Impulse is my favourite all-rounder but it's not a very exciting pickup due to the relatively neutral EQ response.

For stoner/sludge I still think Warpig is the best. C-pig should still be tight enough for other styles if you tighten the lows with a boost.

Too much hi-mid peak in Painkiller for stoner/sludge.

Ceramic Nailbomb and Ceramic Warpig are both great choices for that sound. Whats the natural tone of your guitar ? Keep in mind the warpig is a bit dark and the c-bomb is a little bright with a good amount of attack, it works great in fat sounding mahogany guitars. The c-pig will be a bit smoother on the highs but both of them have an aggresive pissed off character.

I agree with godgrinder. The Impulse is a good choice too but it has a more neutral kinda vibe. Ive tried most of the BK pickups , those three are my favorites along with the Blackhawk and Silo.

I would say C-Bomb or Silo. I think the Silo is a more rounded version of the Warpig and cleans up a bit better.

Yeah the Silo would be the smoothest , so it depends on the guitar again. Ive had the Silo sound great in one guitar and not so much in another. As much as I like the Silo it pushes more in the direction of thick heavy rock than really tight aggressive metal. It can do that really well in the right guitar though.
