C.A.B. owners...question on pedals in front of CAB

Hi guys,

Just purchased a C.A.B a few days ago. I need some suggestions on what pedals to run in front of it. I have a Fulltone Plimsoul that I like very much, but I'm looking for something else as well. Anyone use an Xotic BB in front of the CAB? I did try an EHX hot tubes nano, but it was very boomy sounding. I couldn't get the PlimSoul and hot tubes to work well together.

Also, I am going to try running the CAB through the effects loop of a Marshall Vintage Modern. Anyone else have experience with running it through an effects loop? HOw did it go?

thanks,
Chappie

Hello?

Is this thing on? LOL

Just looking for people that have the CAB for their experiences.

thanks,

Not sure about pedals. I have a CAB and love it but run the speaker out of my head into a Suhr Isobox and take the lineout of that into the CAB. I'd rather use the response of my power amp into the cab to get as realistic a sound out of it as possible. The power amp sims in it are ok, I guess, but why use them when you have a real tube amp and can get the real thing instead of a sim? Sounds a helluva lot better IMO.

Sounds like you should have purchased the torpedo live instead.

I should've but I was skeptical on how good it would sound before I bought the CAB. I'll probably pick up a Live eventually.

I'm using two tube preamp pedals made by "Fredamp", a french amp builder. So it's a bassman, and a twin reverb preamp (I don't know if I'll keep both, but both are great, (way greater than the effectrode blackbird, and AMT ss11 I used to have). In front of them are some fuzzes and a rat.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll be trying out some different options tomorrow night at band practice. I wonder how an EHX English muffn would do as a pre amp for the CAB? It is basically a pre amp isn't it? Those Fredamp pedals look and sound great. But man they are expensive!!

Thanks

If it's not sounding right, check your output volume to the Torpedo. Using pedals to drive a preamp (pedal or otherwise) is usually good, driving the Torpedo's input...not so much. The setting of last active pedal on the chain's master volume is crucial. This will allow the Torpedo to work at its best.

To complement a little what Andy wrote, you should try both positions on the C.A.B. input setting (the switch near the input 1/4"). Adjust the last pedal level to be just under clipping at the input.

A bit miffed at this statement and looking for clarification. At Gearfest you ran the HALO pedal into the CAB and it sounded great. I'm very (im)patiently awaiting the release of Amptweaker's Big Rock pedal to put in front of my CAB for tracking options, as well as a portable jam station. Is this thinking worth re-evaluating?

I think that it depends a lot on the overdrive pedal we are talking about. If its output level can be set to a certain amount that it can drive properly the C.A.B., that's fine.

I thought this was clear but evidently it isn't.

First of all, I really, really like the HALO....overdrives are all different and so are our tastes so try what you like...and I still recommend the Halo.

One really cool tone one can get with a Halo is running the lower gain channel with another overdrive pedal in front....at most of the shows I've used a FTT Gigs Boson. One can set both pedals for unity gain and dial in exactly the right shade of overdrive on each. In that way, there are 3 great tones available, the Halo alone, the gigs boson alone and the gigs boson into the Halo....

just so everyone is clear, unity gain means with the pedal bypassed or active, the output is roughly the same in volume.

The other way to apply pedals would be to back off the drive on the Gigs Boson but ramp the volume way up. This in turn overdrives the Halo's input much in a similar way to if it was a Marshall, Vox or Tweed amp with a boost in front. The problem that could arise is that if I then bypass the Halo, the Gig Boson's outrageous boost setting would cause the Torpedo to distort....ugly converter distortions, not the creamy overdrive we all crave. It is that distortion that I wished to make sure you guys weren't attributing to the Torpedo.

So I've been looking at different options to use in front of the CAB. Last night at band practice I used the pre amp of a Marshall Vintage Modern and it sounded great! But the Vintage Modern is a pretty big 2x12 combo which I don't want to lug around. So I going to go with an AMT ss-11a. It looks to fill the bill quite nicely. I'll probably run an EHX east river drive in front for just a little hair on the clean channel. Not sure.

Really looking forward to next band practice!!

After some test , i think it's necessary to use a good preamp with torpedo cab .
i use 3 FredAmp's preamps with the cab and it's the best combo for me .
For a clean sound i use the crystal preamp and JTBass preamp .
For a crunch sound , the fpm 100 preamp based on marshall jmp 100
They are amazing .

I am still learning guitar and do not play live or in a band. I mainly prefer thrash metal sounds for guitar. I received the C.A.B a few weeks ago too supplement my HD500X pod. However for some reason I do not enjoy tweaking the pod and decided I would try an all pedals route into the C.A.B into a Rokit6 G3 studio monitor.

Currently I have a Blackstar HT-Metal tube pedal running into an ISP Decimator 2 into the C.A.B. I do not have any professional music experience so I do not know how it stacks up against a real amp. The pedal provides clean, crunch, and high gain modes (I am playing Mustaine Livewire pickups into it). It sounds decent to my untrained ears.

I am also getting an Ubershall pedal and an AMT D-2 pedal in the mail next week and will try those in front of the C.A.B as well to report if it sounds well.

i tried to reproduce the famous VH's Brown sound with the fpm100 preamp and hot scream overdrive and it's great

If I were you I'd buy one of the myco British and have a real tube preamp.

Dear all, this is a FB image from my personal FB account, so I don't know if everybody can see it.

Those are the pedalboards we will have on our booth at Musikmesse. You'll notice 2 Fredamp preamps modified by Two Notes, and the Alairex (which is very good) will be replaced by the Diezel Zerrer prototype.

I will post some other pictures on the Two Notes official FB page during Musikmesse:
