hey guys, i have a question to ask.

for those of you that have owned or own a marshall dsl, what did you do to achieve the best tone you could find? im talking tubes, bias, settings etc.

although i am happy with my tone, i know theres something missing, and i really want to get the best i can out of my amp!

thanks alot, any help is greatly appreciated! (for the record, my current rig is -

epiphone les paul custom w/tonezone in the bridge/epiphone g400 SG

vox v847 wah

mxr ZW OD

boss ge7 eq

dsl 50

1960av cab.

I used JJ preamp tubes, Gmajor in the loop controlled by a Behringer FCB1010 that switched effects and channels. I used green channel for cleans and the ultra channel for rhythms and leads. I'd just set a lead patch on the gmajor to have a little more volume. I loved the sound I got with that amp.

awesome, thanks alot! what preamp tubes may i ask? any chance of some settings? thanks!

I had a DSL100....
I replaced the power tubes with JJ tesla EL34 and preamp tubes with groove tube mullard re-issues...EQ'ed the fuck out of it as a stock 800/master JMP , push it with a great OD, run an echoplex through the loop ....I play strats, no humbuckers and it sounded pretty beefy! even at low volumes.

awesome! thanks! was that on the crunch channel or ultra or what? and what do you mean by "EQ'ed the fuck out of it"

Set the bias to 40mV and replace the stock preamp tubes. Oh and crank the damn thing.

I have a DSL50 with the deluxe mod from voodoo amps. I run Ruby EL34BSTR power tubes and chinese 9th gen preamp tubes. I use an ibanez rg1527 with a blaze custom into the green (clean) and red (ultra). Right now I have the eq...

bass = 4
mid = 4.2
treb = 4.8
pres = 2
gain = 9 (red)
gain = 5 (green)

vol = 3 (both)

I run a gmajor in the loop and use it to change the channels on the dsl. I run a cusack screamer in front of the green channel for a semi-dirty sound and control it with an axess electronics grx4. I sometimes run an mxr 10 band eq in the loop to cut some highs (depending on which guitar I'm using). I use a rolls midibuddy foot controller. I use a VHT D412 with Celestion H30s/Hellatones....

...BEST SOUND EVAR!

Gain on 9? That's fuckin' insane in either of the Ultra Gain channel modes. I felt that the gain knob was useful only up to 4 in mode 1 and to like 3 on mode 2.

it was on the red channel, but set so the gain was behaving like a stock marshall head from like the jmp/800 series. Eqing means that that amp has a lot of scooped mids/deep bass which is fine i guess for metal players, but I prefer a mid hump and enough bass to make a strat sound bigger...but not too much. u have to use your ears and listen to what comes out of the cab and adjust as u go along.

good luck

With the mod you can put the gain on 10 and play a 6 string minor7 chord and you can hear every note very clearly without it getting muddy. Don't knock it 'till you try it. :thumbsup:

I like this amp with emg's and run on the red channel with the od1 gain cranked. I use the bass shift and leave the tone shift out.. but you can turn it on and tune the mid eq to get some mids back and it will tighten the amp up. I run SED's at about 88 mA and 2 mullard 12ax7's and 2 chinese. That seems to work great for me. I like to mix some pre amp tubes as I find it adds a little something more.
Turn the amp up to around 4 and to me it sounds great.

DSL100. Modified with JCM 800 OT, and JJ KT88 tubes. Gain on Ultra Lead 2 on 7. Tone shift and Deep switch out.

Bass 5
Mid 4
Treb 3
Pres 4

Les Pauls with low output Duncans (7 to 9K). Mesa Rectifier oversize cabs, with V30's. Kicks ass!!!

Alot of people have put a boost in front of the amp with the amp on the green channel and the gain cranked and I've tried it my self and it sounds awesome.

UPDATE: ok, so a couple of hours ago i biased the amp to 45mv per tube. i must admit, even with my shitty epiphone SG, it sounds SO much better, more dynamic, everything. now, i need to come to a final decision on tubes. im only going to replace the preamp ones, all of them. im going to use this website -

http://www.hotroxuk.com/store/erol.html?909X0&gclid=CP203Yv1x4wCFSYbEAodtllOWQ#1X0

now, if you would be so lovely as to point me towards a combination of tubes that will sound awesome for rock and (most importantly) metal, you can all have a very large millys cookie. the kind of sound im after is shadows fall, arch enemy, trivium, machine head. i know its a very tall order, but i know you lot can do it!

cheers guys! this is very much appreciated! :D

Shuguang Chinese 9thGen 12AX7 are pretty cool sounding for metal and hard rock sounds, i have one in V1 on my Cameron Marshall head and it beefs up the gain a lot!

I heard that the Groove Tubes 12AX7C is a re-labelled Chinese 9th gen, but i dont know for sure! It sounds great though!

The Sovtek 12AX7LPS are also meant to be pretty awesome, but i have yet to try them out! I really want to try them in my Marshall actually!
