Never Bro!!
To be honest with you, I have always looked better with shorter hair. When I wear it out I look funky :D

Haha bet it goes well with da purple pimp suit and hat :D

Anyways if thats the case, and it makes life easier... then cut it! but either way short or ponytail, both look cool!

That said, you lok good with your head shaved. I would looke like a walking nose and forehead :hys:

Dude, I wanted to shave my head for an entire year before I worked up the balls to do it. The front was starting to think about thinning out and I didn't want to have the bald head and the ponytail thing going. Granted I probably had another 5 years but there's nothing like going off the deep end. That said, I don't regret it at all. I even feel more comfortable in all types of social situations where I didn't even realize I wasn't completely comfortable before.

And here's my contribution to the thread. Pre-shaved head, probably around '88.

And the band I moved from Chicago to LA with in 1986 at the Troubador. Me with the candy purple San Dimas Charvel (still have it!). If you look to the right of my Orange cabs in some of the pics, you'll see the flight case for one of my cabs with another amp cover laying on top of my rack. Can you see what's in my rack? Neither could anybody else ;) It was the Furman PQ-3- Lexicon PCM-41 combo that was pretty huge sounding.

Here are some live shots of me from the 80s that I scanned to show some Charvel freaks my old '85 Jack Daniels Graphic San Dimas. This was my main stage guitar in the '80s. I had already changed the pickup and put a Floyd in place of the Kahler, but you can see I kept the Kahler nut. These pictures are from different shows and I believe are the Roxy in LA, but they could be the Water club as well... You can also see how my rig changed when we got sponsored by Duncan, but my main head was still a Jose Arredondo modded JCM 800... Anyway, have a laugh at the outfit (Just try to tell me you didn't wear worse!!!), but enjoy the guitar! I included the last pic, just 'cause I dig the shot. Boy was it loud at that point...

You were in Angel? PUNKYWHIPS! LOL :D

I'll play......

These were taken from 1986-1988......

Outfuckingstanding!!! :D

I wish I wasn't such a tard and moved to LA when I had the chance.

Who the hell told you LA guys about the Pq3? No one on the east coast even remotely knew about them!!! I learned about the power of the PQ3 many years later lol :hys:

Exactly!! It's not like I'm ever going to wear it out again unless I join an 80's tribute band like MetalShop :D

Some of the 80's tribute bands in Buffalo just wear wigs now for the big hair, easier to deal with I guess

Mentoneman slinging an Ibanez

rg140 rosewood/basswood brand new from now defunct santa ana guitar center, for $470 with case, strings, strap, and cable.

i liked the color scheme ala jake e lee and vinnie moore...players not homos.
my poor roomate bought the ultrascrawny ibanez sabre the same day...THIN THIN THIN tone you could cut a tomato with. then to add insult to injury, he had one of those mesa SOB combos.....THE WORST amp mesa ever designed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now with the skating colors i proudly displayed in the second pic, i was just bringing the hawaii beach scene to the drab streets of fullerton!

aloha.

dude that era in socal and time in my life was just indescribeable

beyond just the chicks, which is another story...here are some mental snapshots

-seeing every guitar hero imagineable in tiny clubs and hanging with them afterwards

-spitting cloud of beer on my indian roomate's brother's face in an attempt to hold it in when he stuttered wildly, complete with extreme facial tics, as he tried to shake my hand and introduce himself

-cooking designer shoes in microwaves when orange county chicks get out of control, and then making them roll to the store for more beer and sending them to score dirt weed from the barrio boys in sleeping bags

-vodka soaked watermelons and snakes in swimming pools,

-pulling method airs on a skateboard ramp in a carpeted livingroom, then dragging ramp outside and jumping over cars and stolen washing machines, and pouring gas on the ramp and ground and skating through 6 foot walls of fire----wasted

-roomate drunkenly spilling, then stumbling facefirst into barrels of bacon grease behind local eatery,

-3 day keg parties where your entire apartment building is drunk, and spinning single doobs made from an entire pack of orange zigzags, leaving a wake of bodies twitching in the glow of a static TV

-tossing TVs and furniture off the 3rd floor during finals, and finding resident drug dealer hiding on his closet shelf fetal position after eating half a sheet of window pane because ronald mcdonald told him the FBI was closing in during a TV commercial

-scoring breadbags of shrooms from sketchy toothless transient carnies that turn out to be your common garden variety,

-waking up in a puddle of mud in broad daylight frying on valium from last night,

-giving hitchikers rides in the back of a truck with a shell,
and then driving 50 over speedbumps in a parking lot and tossing burning socks through the sliding window at them,

-mixing hash oil, HBs, and peruvian marching powder in a bowl made from a nerd's tuba mouthpiece and faucet screen, and taking bucket rips, before rolling a 6'er of brew on the way to motley crue and aerosmith at the forum

-watching dokken underlock and key on microdot, desperados taking dumps in the urinals, and pulling amps into the courtyard at our apartment at 2 in the morning to play star spangled banner cranked

I am freaking hurting reading this one

My bass players Jackson was a custom shop deal.

And Ralph, I learned about the PQ-3 when I was still in Chicago. The other guitarist in my band went to see Rough Cutt and hung with Amir after the gig. Amir took a liking to him and said, "Dude, the whole key to that tone is the Furman PQ-3". We had no idea what a PQ-3 even was but I went out and bought one and hooked it up and we just started messing with it. Soon after we moved to LA and we saw them in Strypers rack, then Doug Aldrich's rack and just a couple of other guys.

Honestly, very few people in LA knew about them or used them, but every now and then you would see a gig and the guitarist would have that tone and you'd check for and see a Furman in there. I used to cover my rack at gigs because I swear I got asked all the time what I was using. We opened for Racer X once and I swear all of GIT was there and my rack was covered and I answered 100 times after the gig what kind of mod my Marshalls had in them. No mods I told them, bone stock, and they were. :)

I feel much better now!! I was starting to think that it was common knowledge for the LA guys!! Its funny because the PQ3 gives off such a unique sound and I could not for the life of me figure out how some guys were getting that sound!! I had e-mailed Michael Sweet back in the mid to late 90's and he told me about the PQ3. He also told me that he would not have told me about the PQ3 in the early days because it was a closely guarded secret :D

I hear you about the mods because when you use the Furman it turns any stock amp into a flamethrower lol!! I definitely would have asked you the same question had I met you back in the day!! :D

You want to hear another modded amp story? I used to use a Marshall 2210 with a graphic EQ in the loop. I was taught that by John Levin who now plays in Dokken!! I used to get asked all the time, what mods were in my amp and I always told the truth about what I was using. The funny thing is that every guy who I told the amp was stock thought I was full of shit and lying. They could not get over the fact that it was the EQ in the loop giving me that sound. I started telling eveyone it was modded to avoid fights!! (yup... one guy wanted to kick my ass because he thought I was lying!!)

BTW... you can hear what the amp sounded like if you go here and play the bad girls clip!! This was John Levins band in the 80's!!
