OT: Carpet Tiles to Prevent Reverb and Block Out Sound?

Hey Guys,

In the back of our house, we recently got a room done up for a 'Music Room' of mine. It's pretty much done, except for some furnishing. We painted the walls a creamy colour, the problem is though that the surface itself isn't very nice, there are some spots where it's a little unlevel etc.. And doesn't look nice sometimes. As well as that, it tends to be pretty echo-y when i play the JVM loud.

Now, I was up in Homebase the other day, and saw Carpet Tiles (Size about 50cmx50cm) for £1.99 Each. And they had a bunch in a nice creamy colour. Which i thought would look pretty nice on the walls. The thought came into my head about putting these carpet tiles on the walls? Would this actually be any benefit to the acoustics of the room? I had also thought about putting some form of Sound Insulation Material (?) between the carpet and the walls.. To help and keep a little more sound from getting out.

Has any of you guys heard about this been done before, or even has anyone here done it?

At the stage the rooms at, i don't really wanna go for any elaborate methods of soundproofing or such.. Like building new walls etc. But if this carpet thing would help prevent a bit of sound escaping, and also help the acoustics.. I'd be all for it.

Any, Comments, or Advice is apprechiated.

Cheers

It'll probably make the room sound less echoey. As far as sound-proofing, you'll have to build a room inside of a room to achieve that. And nothing will stop bass signals.

Yea, Thats the sort of procedure i don't wanna go through at this point.

How about putting something like this stuff:

On top of the excisting walls, and then carpet tiles on top of that.. Would that be of any benefit? - I understand i won't be able to achieve full sound-proofing.. I'm kinda just looking for something to help keep some sound from getting out?

If you do a google search on soundproofing there are some very good articles on the science involved in both deadening sound in a room, as well as blocking it from traveling outside the room.

For example, acoustic foam is more useful as a means to deaden a room for recording; it won't really do much to keep the sound (especially the bass) from traveling outside. Mitch's suggestion of building a room inside a room seems to be the best idea. If I remember properly, the whole idea is to make the sound wave go through as many phase changes as possible (ie, solid to air to solid again). Every time the wave has to change phase from a wall to open air, it loses energy.

Really shaggy carpeting will help with the echo inside the room since it increases the surface area of the wall as well as presenting a fairly randomized surface vs. a flat wall. However, I don't think it'll help you with soundproofing the room that much. I could be wrong, though, I'm no expert :D

Carpet tiles are squares of carpet that you are ready to use to exchange blankets rolled. It is advisable to choose the carpet tiles cheap carpet rolled as opposed to they might be easier to implement. Another important factor for the cheap carpet tiles is that they can simply be replaced in case of spills, etc.. Some areas of the carpet must endure increased visitors therefore tend to be much more subject to wear carpet tiles can simply replace these tiles instead of carpet complete save money. Compared to treadmills, carpet tiles are easier to handle and require little specialized in transportation.
