Played a Vintage Modern again today...

Since I have the JVM and I know you had it, in comparison, do you think the VM needs an overdrive or boost for soloing? Dumb question because I haven't really researched it, but does the VM have footswitchable clean/dirty or is it strictly a single channel amp?

The band I'm in now plays everything from Kiss, Def Leppard, Buck Cherry, and Metallica to Bryan Adams, John Cougar, Beastie Boys, and Joan Jett.

I have to say that when I walked out of the Marshall booth at NAMM this year with all the east coast HOM guys and they were all RAVING about the JVM, that I kept saying that I really dug the VM. I'm more of a VM sort of guy with my vintage Super Leads and my Mojave and the VM really impressed me at NAMM.

Then everyone who got to play them at first was saying they sucked so I forgot about them.
 
Did they not have the 50Watt version, I keep reading how the 50Watt version is supposed to be better?

It does seem that this amp growing on people over time is common. Again and again I've read about people who either thought it was just "okay" or outright disliked it at first, who later ran it through a different cab, or tweaked the settings, or ran a boost up front, and suddenly love the amp.

I also agree that the JVM did come out strong from the gate, but the VM has been steadily gaining. A number of influencial folks are starting to use the VM. Slash, Doug Aldrich, Luke Morley and Ben Matthews from Thunder, Bernie Marsden, Paul Gilbert and Ron Asheton from the Stooges to name a few.

It was after the VM starting garnering all this interest that I got curious and went looking for the Vintage Modern Forum. The JVM410 has a forum, (I'm one of the Mods,) so I figured the VM would, too. I couldn't find one, so I decided to start one. The link is in my signature. i like the vm, but cuz im into heavier stuff, it probably wouldn't be right for me.

Your background of old school 70's and 80's single channels should well prepare you well for the VM, not suprised at all by this :lol:
 
Yeah it's a classic rock kinda amp but the voicing and clearity do it for me. But my metal side will need to be appeased :D so I know a pedal search will quickly follow the purchase of the VM. Maybe my Keeley SD-1 will be it but I think it might color the tone a bit.
 
could you try your vm with a boost and see if you can get some great hi-gain tones?

Well ... believe it or not, there just happens to be a thread on this very subject, including a clip or two, over at the Vintage Modern Forum.
 
It definitely sounded a bit meaner with my Rustbox overdrive pedal but not nearly as 'metal' as the JVM. It has more of an open, less compressed tone. It is Vintage meets modern all the way. Personally, it's not metal enough for my tastes or style but it will do the AC/DC thing just fine....Along with all the vintage tones in it.
 
I don't know, I've really come to depend on my JVM for it's wide versatility especially being in a cover band. I need to go from crunch, to clean to overdrive with just a stomp. Sarg, if you got the VM how would you cover all the bases since you do a wide variety of cover tunes as well?

He shouldnt have a problem at all. I gigged for years with a two channel amp. Mainly used just one channel and had all the clean, crunch, lead I needed. Single and two channel amps can be just as versatile with a guitar that cleans up well with the guitar's volume knob and a pedal. Some guys like you like having the seperate channels which has its own advantages but others can go along way with a volume knob on one channel.
 
the Vintage Modern seems cool to me..it has a voicing that sounds like it would sound great in a band mix

I have a JVM I love it , but I recently played a VM and I liked it as well , the JVM is more metallish but I think the VM cranked and maybe with a OD pedal would kick ass. I think Ill buy a VM too :thumbsup:
 
Helps to be able to play like Greazy....ha ha!! They don't sound quite as good when I play through them.......sounds like the VM is picking up some steam.
