Pedals vs Rack

what do you prefer in general

I don't know what would be the more apprioriate way to go between rack and pedals for effects. Is there any way you can run pedals midi like and control them with a midi board ?

id say pedals for live use and rack for studio.

rack all the way around.

setting up is the greatest ever.

set it down

plug in to your cab

plug your guitar intothe rack

turn it on


DONE!

now...actually creating all your patches can take a bit, but wow it's worth it.

ive got a crap load of pedals like 12 to 15 of them
id have to say that when i use them i find myself quickly adjusting them to get my sounds and thats pretty simple in its own right

but some things work before the start of the chain and some work after
now depending on the sounds you chase
the routeings of some of these effects work great in the loop of your current rig ( tube amps ) but you cant get everything you ask for !

now the rack stuff
well i can say its pretty much a whole differnt ball game
it takes time to tweek your rig to your settings and a bit of fine tuning

now depending on just how complacated you choose to make your rack :? ( those routeing can get pretty fustrateing at times )
but once you have it under raps its good stuff to learn

ive got the Digitech 2101 artist setup
and its a wild tone ride its got some cool stuff in it
that we dont get in most of todays gear ( Boss GT / GNX ) type of pedals

now if they could leave the signal routeing to us users
in them type of floor boards id still have my Boss GT unit's

if you are clearly looking at your opptions for the devise's you chosse to place in your rack you should look no futher then some of the owners manule PDF's ( where i do my search's and own thoughts of each unit i
investagate before buying 8)

i agree on both aswell. Id only use a rack unit for Modulations/Delays/Reverbs. But everything else id use pedals.

I really prefer racks... all controlled by a midi pedalboard... what else should I need ...

Each has it's good and bad sides.

pedals (good ones anyway) tend to sound a little more interesting. For example the SIB echodrive is a sound you just can't get from a rack unit.

Rack units have all the benefits of digital technology (presets, install recall, programming etc) but unless your're willing to dish out major cash (say... TC G-Force or Eventide Eclipse) I don't think you're going to get something that's interesting for more then 10 minutes.


As for switching your pedals midi-like you'll need a switching system like one of

I use BOTH. Pedals in front of amps Middle Dry on a pedal tray in rack(MXR Flanger, Phase 90, Dyna Comp, Marshall Blues Breaker II OD), rack stuff in parallel L/R Wet. CAE controlled.

An all in one unit that is MIDI and a floor unit is the Yamaha UD Stomp. They don't make them anymore and are expensive used but they work great in the loop. They are also a pain in ass to tweak.

Pedals in front switched by a GCX and FX units in the loop, all switched by midi!

I'm going to midi everything via my Columbus, only other pedals I'll have are ones with expressional pedals such as Digitech Whammy pedal + a wah

you know for the life of me being new to racks i just cant seem to get the midi to co operate with my gear

i know it has to be me and a few mistakes i make or its my rolls midi pedal

and i belive i need something to make that midi hookup ? but dont know what it is im missing :? to make it all connect

well frist im am Japaneese and American Indian
weird huh and second the name is actually pronounced

second here is my list of gear

Crate SPA 300 Power amp
Power conditioner
Peavey Rock Master 4 tube pre amp
Digitech GSP 2101 2 tube pre amp
Art SGX Lite effects unit
Digitech S 100 effects unit

so i have it set up like this

conditioner / 2101 / rock master / S 100 / SGX / power amp

i know the 2101 has some cool effects
so i dont run that into the art or S100 i leave those for the peavey

im also thinking i may drop the SGX unit from the chain
and just run everything back to the peavey and Digitech

i have the controlers for the peavey and the digitech 2101 > C-1
but not the S 100

so id like to be able to really control most of it myself on stage
which i can do on the control one for the 2101

i have the Rolls midi pedal but have used a couple other midi controlers that somewhat dident work for me ( dude even set it up )
now i need a new or used midi conntroler any sugguestions ?

I'd just buy a MIDI Mate and hook that up. Technically, any MIDI controller should work.

i think rack is more versatile

Diezel Herbert, use a rack to optimize the midi capabilities. For EVERYTHING else (non-MV metal panel Marshalls, Cameron-modded MV Marshalls, Peavey 5150II) I use pedals full on. Axess BS2 to Phase90 to amp, with a EVH MXR Flanger and a Maxon AD999 delay in the EFX loop. Dial up to taste!
