About 4 years ago I had a custom made Skervesen 4AP 7 String HSS built. It took 1 full year and is a beautiful guitar. But it was so DAMN bright sounded, it was piercing. I have tried at least 5 or 6 pickups and got it a little better, but still wasn't happy.

I bought an EMG 85-7XH and 2 EMG SA7's. It took forever to do the install because all the 5way switches I had were too tall for the body cavity. Anyway, spare you from all the details.

The guitar a sounds AMAZING now. The little darker 85-7 in the bridge works perfectly with this guitar and the SA7's sound great too.

Done a bunch of different stuff this year including buying an ESP Viper with EMGs in it. Sounds perfect for what I wanna do and is the guitar I play most now.

I’ve hard similar experiences with guitars I didn’t like at first, but it was the Fishman Fluences that rescued them for me

It’s funny, about 10 years ago I had EMG’s in several guitars and loved them. Then slowly drifted away. For years I haven’t even thought about going Active but I remembered having an EMG 85 in the bridge before and how it darkens things up a bit and they really rounded out the sharp treble of this guitar. Happy camper, first time I’ve enjoyed playing this guitar.

Nice axe! What were the other pickups you tried?
It’s over about a 3 year period, but think this is most of them: SD Custom 5, DiMarzio Tonezone, BKP Warpig, DiMarzio Super Distortion, DiMarzio Evolution and seems like 1 or 2 others I can’t recall. The BKP Trilogy’s in the middle and neck were always ok.

What were your thoughts on the Warpig? I'm having a similar experience with one of my guitars and the Warpig was up next.

I went with the Alnico Warpig since it should be a little smoother than the Ceramic Warpig. It was good, but didn’t take out the harsh treble as good as the Active EMG 85. Are you having trouble with a 6 or 7 string guitar?

The '85's a great compromise between the colder / harsher '81 and jazzy / warm '89 IMHO. Not surprised it's workin' great for you.

I made the mistake of puttin' '89s all-'round on a custom super Strat back in the '90s and learned my lesson the hard way. Great for jazz (if I could play it, which I can't), but muddy as all Hell for anything heavier.

It was a super-warm mahogany axe, so I probably should've gone '81s or at least '85s.

i know this is sacrilege around here, but i got a KILLER suhr reb beach, and it has an aldrich which i dont like! i know, everyone here loves the aldrich. i am thinking of putting an EMG set in it, like it came with stock.

great the EMGs worked out stratjacket!

Actives are great for "saving" a guitar you don't like the tone of, in general.

The same principle is why actives *don't* work in certain guitars.
