I remember seeing him play in a little hall years ago before he was really on the map. It was sponsored by a cool music store Music Lab in Lansing Illinois which has been closed for years now. It was just him and his digital player. Very cool up close settings.

I've seen GH about 4 times, he's always so fluid and smooth with great licks.

Gary was brand new to the scene in 1989 when I went to GIT. I spent almost all my time between Gary and Bruce Boulliet’s open sessions (they were each there half the day 2 days each week). Damn how I wish I could go back and re-live that year of my life with a bit more mileage on the ol’ guitar odometer.

The thing nobody mentions is, he's a hell of a nice guy to boot. Totally down to earth, very approachable, and just a class act. Too bad his signature Peavey XXX derivative never came to light. Dude had killer tones and played them for quite awhile. They were supposed to modify one for him, (ala the JSX for Satriani), and produce a Hoey signature model. Such a great player, very tasteful.

I got to see Gary Hoey band at Cheers (no longer open) in Sunnyvale, CA during the '90s. He came out with his early solo instrumental albums and played at Cheers using a wet/dry/wet guitar rig with a live band. I forgot who the other musicians were. I was watching the show and got a couple of beers. I gave Gary a compliment on his playing & the show, handed him a Heineken beer, and he gave me his guitar pick. Cool guy who's a talented guitarist/ teacher, into martial arts, an avid surfer, and is involved in environmental activism. I have respect for him as a player and as a person.
