Tubes not included

I don't think it matters much if you remove tubes or not when shipping, Unless they're put in their own box and are sent separately.
I probably matters more how well the amps are packed.
I had 2 amps shipped to me last week. Both had tubes left in and 2 different outcomes based on how well they were packed.
I bough JerEvil's Gemini. He packed the shit out of it. thick styrofoam on all sides, form fitting box, the whole 9 yards. I think it coulg have survived a fall off a building. Everything including tubes were perfectly intact.
The other amp is currently with the tech having some repairs done from shipping damage. Dude put the thinnest piece of bubble wrap on the front face, not other cushioning or packing material. Footswitch was basically in a paper bag. An enough empty space in the box to land a plane. All but 2 of the tubes came out the sockets. Chassis was bent around the transformers. The tubes didn't break but were pretty much fucked. The only reason they didn't break was because they got wedged between a transformer and the shell. Luckily it was just the tubes and the chassis being slightly bent. The tech didn't find any electrical, circuitry, or other damage. Whether they were taken out or not tubes still would have been destroyed.

The only time I've had tubes damaged was when the shipper did a shitty packing job. Not to say damage couldn't ever happen, but I'd be more concerned with how well the amp is packed over if the shipper left the tubes in or not.

Getting an amp without tubes wouldn’t be a big deal for me, as long as it was priced accordingly. First thing I do when getting an amp is fire it up and make sure there aren’t any issues. Usually, I pull the tubes and test them. 9X out of 10, I usually put new glass in anyway, as I have certain types I prefer. So, no biggie if I were to get one without tubes If priced right.

Pulling tubes when shipping an amp? If the amp has retainers for all tubes, no. Other amps, I usually pull them, label them for each location (I’m a nerd about testing / selecting tubes for each slot), bubble wrap each and put them in a box that fits within the cab. Most of the glass I use is not cheap to replace and I don’t want any breaking. Ship the amp with the mounting screws facing down to take stress off of the screws. Pack it all to the nines.

Never had any issues with damage on stuff I’ve sold/shipped. On the other hand, I’ve received amps that were packed like shit… broken glass, screws pulled through the cab, broken tanks, dented/damaged cabs….might as well have just sent the amp without packing materials.

I only remove the tubes if they are hanging down and there are no tube retainers. I have been installing those tube retainers springs on every vintage fender that comes through, just saves a lot of headaches even when transporting for gigs.
Different Strokes. I can't stand those things and removed them off my Splawn. The spring type. I'm not clear how tubes wrapped separately in bubble wrap break? Let me guess, the glass is touching on all of them?

The last amp I got with a tube break, the tube had slipped out of the bubble wrap and smacked around inside the chassis. Crappy wrap job for sure.

Tube amp for sale..(capacitors and resistors not included)..

I can see that happening too. Also, stupidity. If I were to ship an amp today I would feel bad if I left all the tubes in their sockets. I would make sure my amp and my tubes that I just sold you got to you safely.

My guess is your Splawn doesn’t have downward hanging tubes, in which case removing them is no big deal. Fenders typically use these little bent metal things which do not help much to keep the tubes in place, hence me adding the springs.

Got a 66 fender champ years back where the 6V6 and the 5Y3 were rolling around in the cabinet. Amazingly they were good.

Been a few years since I shipped an amp, but I got in the habit of asking the buyer if they wanted the tubes left in the amp or if they wanted them wrapped carefully in individual tube boxes with an outer box around them.

Oh yeah man. I knew what you were talking about. Totally different. But I've advised people in the past to just ship their Fender combos upside down. Any tube combo.

I'm still going to pull the tubes and wrap them individually and make sure they are safe.

Has anyone ever tried to sell an amp to guitar center with the tubes taken out beforehand? I wonder how they would react. Do they put their own test tubes in it or do they not even accept it?

Had kidney stones twice. Absolute agony. Kidney stones are amazingly still not the most unwanted things to have ever been shot from a dick. Top spots are Eric and Don Jr.
Hunter Biden sure was a winner sperm.

Trying to pack an amp so that it sits a particular way is really pointless. the shipping company is going to flip it over ever which way during the shipping process and not really care about the words “this side up” or “fragile” on the side of the box.

the best thing to do to stabilize the chassis to the headshell is to wedge cardboard or foam tightly between the top of the transformers and the headshell. Also keeps the weight of the transformers from pulling the legs.

Yes I’ve fully recovered from those supremely painful episodes. Thanks for (not) asking and choosing to avoid making even the slightest statement of compassion. How Republican of you.

Hunter's daily routine includes open ended tubes.

I get them every 2-5 years starting when I was 30 years old, it was a 10mm stone that had to be ultrasonic blasted and passed. January 2021, these two buggers had me on the floor for 3 hours. Drank a gallon of water, laid fetal position and waited.
