I miss my old shitty Solid State tone

I really do. A Randall rg100es with a Maxon od808 or Metal Zone as a boost. That was it... simple, loud, punchy, ripped your face off tone. I miss the immediacy of solid state and the sharp attack with palm mutes. That amp wasn't that great without a boost, but with one it was perfection and I miss it. Tube amps are more rounded off in the top end and aren't as punchy and tight IMO but you get the warmth and harmonic content I guess?? even though an old Randall is a pretty warm sounding amp. I need to find another one, either a rg100es or a rg100ht. If someone has one let me know at the end of the month and I'll buy it off you.

Dude I hear you...buddy and I get together to jam once or twice a month....the amps that get played most when we do that are my Herbert and his Randall RH100. That thing stands UP.

Older RGs go for premium prices now because all the kids who grew up on Pantera are snapping them up.

Thankfully picked up an RG100HT & RG200ES (Century 200) cheaply 15 years ago.

Boost the shit out of it with a parametric EQ and a 6 band = face melting distortion.

Bought mine at a yard sale last year. Only solid state amp Ive had was my first a peavey in 76. I bought thinking it didnt work and got home and was floored through a greenback cab. Added boss ge 10 and sd1 game on.

I've had tons of solid state amps....but after 1999, it's been all tube, when I purchased a new Peavey 5150 for $585. Yup...new for $585. It was a mind blower how much push that amp had. Before that I've owned: Crate G160xl, Ampeg ss-150, Marshall Valvestate 8100, Peavey Supreme, I guess if I missed it, I would've bought something again.

I hear you on the immediacy of solid state. Lately I’ve been having a ton of fun with a sansamp Gt2 clone I modded slightly (removed cab sim), into a solidstate power amp with an eq to simulate some of the presence and depth I would get from a tube power amp (so it’s not just getting punched in the face with 400hz).

In the British mode it’s so immediate and tight, I love it. I feel a bit silly using this pedal so much lately while looking at neglected tube amps in my room but if it works it works.

Randall has made some killer SS amps. Fixed an old Commander II that was before the RG series, really nice amp. More in the SS Fender Twin vein.

I used to have a Randall RH100 and sold it probably 15 years ago. Regret it, I really did like that amp. Every now and then I’ll get on a quest to find one but never can.

I bought a new Randall RG1503 a couple years back. On its own it's not good at all, but with a good boost that cuts lows, it's incredible. Ultra tight, super high gain. Love the dumb thing. Put an EQ in the loop and it gets even more insane.

when i really think about it, id guess at least half and probably more of my favorite metal tones are SS.
I agree with you, same here. Crowbar's tone on "Sonic Excess In Its Purest Form" kicks my ass every time I hear it. "Broken Glass" and "Lifesblood..." have killer tones as well. All solid state Randall tones, and I think Sonic Excess was a Randall Cyclone mixed with a RG100ES.

I listened to this album when it came out and I honestly don't think I've ever heard better solid state high gain tone.

Actually, to me this album pretty much sets the benchmark for it.

You can find the lower wattage version combos for reasonable prices yet. I picked up a RG50 for 199 late last year. Wire your 16 ohm cab for 4 ohms, or slave it you got a nice powerful enough rig.
It’s a 1988 and sounds just like the RG80es I had 4 yrs ago.

My buddy had this just collecting dust in his garage, so he let me have it. I bought the two space, and got new knobs since half of the originals were missing the faces. It functions perfectly and totally rips. I’m hitting the front with a Fortin TS-9 and a Boss 7 band graphic in the loop and it’s brutal. Sounds damn near as good as my tube amps in a SS way. Back in the early 90’s, my guitarist and I both played these for a few years in a thrash band we were in, so it’s fun to have one again.
Here’s the actual amp in my buddy’s band back in ’05.

I have this amp also. Cant make myself get rid of it. I put a rackmount graphic eq in loop and a boost in front, pure dime
