Yes, this is old and gross. But I want to settle a debate. Is this rosewood?

What kind of a debate? Black is black, white is white, Rosewood is Rosewood.

I had a guy at a shop get indignant and insist it is not rosewood. I just kept laughing. Oh well.

I would suggest #0000 steel wool to clean off the gunk and it will lightly polish the frets at the same time. Then I would go with some Roche-Thomas fretboard conditioner on the wood and then re-string it the next day.

Wonder if he thought it was African mahogany. It’s nasty either way.

I used to get the big dirt away with fetboard cleaner and a soft toothbrush.

I really like lemon oil to dissolve garbage. Then mineral oil to hydrate.

0000 steel wool then soak lemon oil and leave it wet and stand 12hrs+ and wipe it off with cheese cloth the next day. If it was dry it will pull it in and where it didn't need the treatment it will still be wet in those areas. Make sure there is no waxes in the lemon oil u choose!

Yep.

And no tooth brushes unless it is a brand new one. That .0000 steel wool will make the job a lot faster do your frets justice.
