One of my favorites for sure. And I agree, the KSR stuff is where I’d be going if I was looking for an amp like this. I wanted a colossus for years and when I finally got one ( first ever made actually) it absolutely floored me. Has the best high end on earth, even while being kind of dark. Phenomenal crunch and punch. Like the best of a recto and an SLO with the response of a mark series almost.

Agree 100%. The amp is on the dark, thick side, yet the highs rip and cut like a hot knife through butter, without ever being harsh or unpleasant, just pure growl and aggression. And yes, the amp punches like a heavyweight with zero flub and excellent clarity. My buddy plays it through two Greenback loaded cabs, and its a vicious combo. I’ll stand in front of his rig at practice/gigs and honestly can’t believe how fucking good it sounds. His beloved 20th Anniversary Ecstacy has always been his #1, but the Rhodes dethroned it. Lol
Awesome score having the first one made! And your Recto/SLO/Mark comparison is spot on, and it is ALL that.
I had an Ares, and it was a killer sounding amp, but the 50 watt power section left me wanting more in comparison to my 4 and 6 power tube amps. Lol I definitely see a 100 watt KSR in my future though.

Out of the amps you said I’d choose Diezel . I have an Uberschall and it awesome but my Diezels do chewy and dark and still cut through mix jamming live .

That said, which Diezel do you recommend for classic rock to 80s to 90s and 2000s rock, grunge and metal?
I think of Diezels as metal amps.

That's why I've been looking at the Revv. On paper it has all I want, including the chewy Red channel.

The VH4 often gets described as stiff, but I think that’s more in feel. Doesn’t actually sound stiff to me. The VH4 is well suited to those genres and imo not as metal as the Herbert, but might be stiff for your taste. Not what I consider a chewy amp to be. They sound imo dry and grainy. The earlier Blueface and Purpleface I have are very different (and imho light years better amps), but sadly very hard to come by

The Herbert model is more modern, compressed, polished, smoother and saturated sounding. A bit processed/artificial sounding imo. A bit cold/clinical sounding too I felt, especially for cleans and lower gain. It’s of course versatile, but doesn’t have any tones that are amazing imo. The Dmoll is like a much worse sounding Herbert. The Hagen I thought was awful. Very artificial sounding, inauthentic crunch on powerchords. Kinda like a diet version of a good modded Marshall sound

The Revv’s I remember sounding for my taste artificial and bland. Nothing particularly special imho

Honestly you can get any tone you need out of Diezel . And they can be complete opposite of stiff if need be . I honestly feel a Rev can not compare with a Diezel I’m any way at all . But that’s me .

Well my PRS Archon I thought beat the VH2 I played and the Einstein, so a lot if personal preference.

I have a vh 4 and two Herberts. The Herbert is my fav . It gets chewy easy but I don’t like chewy but it does it easy . Honestly once I put 6l6s in my Herbert 1 I can get anything. I really love it and keep it to blend with my Hermanson and Wizard

I'm not a metal guy keep in mind other than stuff like Tool, Alice in Chains, older 80s/90s metal but the stuff I love most is chewy grungy, rock, hard rock.

Well I’m picky I guess. I don’t care for amps that do tones 7/10 or 8/10 good no matter how versatile/practical. Those very early Diezel amps are something special in my opinion, the later ones were much weaker imho. I had a KSR Gemini and have played a Colossus. I thought they were good amps, but not in the amazing/top notch category for me. They might satisfy what I think you’re criteria was (dark, thick, chewy), but I think the old 2 channel Recto's and Rev 1 Uber do that thing even better. The Uber Rev 1 is one of my favorite high gain amps, but a lot more limited (really just imo for heavier stuff and shred)

Everyone is different of course like you said. For me though there’s really no flavor of tone I don’t love, but I just really only care about a 10/10 version of each flavor. Maybe this makes me sound like an elitist dick, but that’s what I’m interested in and sadly those items are typically very rare and expensive. I’m just being honest with my experiences with the amps I’ve tried. I’ve tried at this point pretty much all the amps I’ve wanted to except just a Larry, Hermansson and a real Trainwreck. I also always compare any new amp or piece of gear I try with several things I have as a reference point. Those AB comparisons are crucial imo. The sad reality for me at least is there just aren’t many recent made amps that are anything exceptional. Just my opinion. Many brands (Diezel, Bogner, Soldano, Mesa/Boogie among others) had some really great amps in their early days and have gotten worse and worse since. I guess I’m very off topic now from this thread lol. I just wish these gear makers would step up their game and try to get their stuff as good or better than they used to be if possible. Same can be said with newer pedals, pickups, speakers, etc

IMO it depends a lot on what tones one "needs". I've not yet tried a single amp that I feel can do more than maybe 3 or 4 different tones at a very high level, not just good/getting the job done at a tone, (which is why I have too many amps lol), but I get what you're saying. I’ve got great cleans , AC/DC crunch , tight thrash , loose ass stoner metal , all kinds of things out if Herbert mk 1 .I don’t think it’s just a metal amp . My favorite amp is my Hermansson but Herbert mk 1 still my Swiss army when I fill in for cover bands . I prefer it over my mk 3 and Vh4

Interesting on thr Herbert. I hear it can be so fat and full. They say the single notes on that amp are huge. Hell if it does classic rock, I may try it if I can get a good deal.

I love it to this day . Feel it’s almost underrated now . I have a wizard and love it just as much . Hermanson is only amp I like better than those but it’s not chewy at all . As for Herbert it has the - switch and it really helps me get thise acdc gnr crunch tones as well as fat metal .

I had some great speakers, pickups and amps that I've sold. I got divorced and sold off most stuff.

Now I'm getting new stuff and it sucks.
I used to have some older Bill Lawrence Gibson pickups that were creamy and fat, plus my 2005 Bogner Shiva 20th. That Shiva was my home base. I sold it to get a PRS Archon because I joined a metal band that fell apart. I miss my Shiva.

I could find another or an older XTC.
I also had a PWE Event Horizon and have a 2002 BFG modified Dual Rec.
This is my fattest amp now but the Archon I think sounds better overall.

I had a two channel DR years ago.

My buddy gigs his old Russian Bear amps and old JCM 800s with pedals and his 90s stock Marshall 412 with G12T-75s and it sound awesome.

His main amp for his classic rock and 80s rock band is a 5150!
It sounds great.
The 5150 I assume is versatile ifEVah used it?
