Dude messages or even makes a bid with a message and when you reply it says dude is not receiving messages at this time.

In the message or the offer/message he asks you to contact via his email address.

Did reverb cut him for adding his email, is he finishing for email to spam, or something more nefarious. BTW, no I did not email him offline. Just curious what's going on here. I canceled the order.

He’s trying to bypass seller protection.

Yeah.. I've experienced some chicanery lately, selling on Reverb.

If I got his money before I shipped, what what would be the risk. Seems like he bypasses buyer protection too.
I mean if he pays FF, which I doubt he would. Just curious what move it. Pays you on Paypal, claims he got an empty box and demands a refund?

I had an EBMM Axis on Reverb and a guy messaged me, asked if I was on RT or TGP. He found me there and we made a deal outside of Reverb. All went very smoothly and I discounted by the fee amount Reverb would have collected and he paid me PP F&F.

That's what I am trying to find out. Like should I email the dude incase he did just want to save money offline? Or is there some way I get burned...i.e. dude just spam bombs me once he's got me email.

This dude didn't give much of a message, so pretty sure it was scam. I'd expect someone trying to save a little to give a little more info in the message. Like email me here and we can work a deal if a Forum member.

Dont do email

It could link into god knows what phishing spam log

If he was real he would have said “can we talk on —— forum where im a member”

Also (for everyone) a reminder- dont be old minded - just bc we cannot figure out how emailing some rando can be “bad” doesnt there isnt some “danger”

He could be trying to save on the automatically added tax, which would also save you the seller fees, but I would only recommend that if there was mutual trust between both of you.

That's what I came to say. Mutual trust between both. If I found out it was Mr. XYZ on Rig-Talk and I recognized his user name and he had 1,000 post that is one thing. If I don't recognize the user name and he has 3 posts then well.....

I did a deal for a Marshall 2555x I found on eBay, but outside of eBay. I can't remember how we got each other's contact info, but I basically offered him cash in a parking lot deal for what he would have netted anyway. It was a two hr drive for each of us. I got a little suspicious when his emails were like, "Hi Richard! How are you doing?" Just a little too nice and friendly, but it turns out that's just the kind of guy he was. Totally legit, met at a grocery store in Blythe, CA, smooth deal, everyone came away happy. Not everyone is a scammer.

My Laney gh100s was like this. Found it on reverb, he said he has it listed in multiple locations but wouldn’t specify which locations. Found it on Facebook marketplace. Sent him a message on there and we met up locally with a cash deal.

Don’t step over dollars to save a dime.

On a $1,000 guitar sale you might be able to save some money on fees and your buyer might save some money on taxes.

That’s all well and good until you get a bad actor who is setting you up to get fucked over.

I read somewhere just this week that someone got a refund on a F&F payment from PayPal. So F&F is apparently not as “final” as we like to believe.

Do you want to risk losing the value of a guitar in order to “save” $100?

Thus guy may be legit, but you are taking all the risks.

Some are legit, most ARE NOT. I've been on Reverb nearly since it's inception, and have over 400 transactions, I've seen them all.

When they ask you to email them, red flag. When you respond and they can't accept messages, red flag. New user, no feedback, red flag. If I'm not accepting offers and people message me with one and their email address, I ignore them. Period. If I am accepting offers and they message me one, vs. using the make offer function, that's just an an ignorant person I don't want to deal with anyway...

There are legit users that try to conduct transactions outside of Reverb, but they're usually much smarter in their approach, and a little more obvious.

Appreciate the feedback. On the above: I often message an offer first before I actually make it on Reverb. Sometimes I am thinking of offering on multiple items and don't want to wait 24hrs to be passively rejected before I make my next offer (and don't want 3 offers out there at once if only planning to buy 1 of them).

Messaging to see if they would take my offer: 1. Lets me see if they are quick responder 2. allows me to not wait the 24 hours if they are can quickly reject over messaging. You won't believe how many people will sit on an offer an just let it expire (either not watching their add, just pissed you "low balled" them by god-forbid offering 10% lower, or they want to hold the offer hoping a better one comes in. I've even messaged people asking for more pics and never ever heard back.

So I wouldn't write of messaged offers too quick. Just my two cents.

Unfortunately, you can't be too obvious trying to set a deal up off Reverb through Reverb PM's, etc. One of the first deals I did, off Reverb, but discussed through Reverb PMs netted them charging me for the transaction a few months later with a message like "It appears like you found a buyer on Reverb, this is the charge...."
I was shocked that they were monitoring PMs like that.

I didn’t think they had the legal authority to do that. Ban you sure but charge your account without your authorization when they benefit from the transaction? Sounds illegal.

Yes they monitor PMs. You can say you’re selling on other platforms or social media pages but you can’t say specifically what site - they can’t control freedom of speech in their terms and conditions but can stop you once you start to point them explicitly somewhere else. They also can’t stop you from wanting to talk to someone on the phone for more details. They don’t like it because they can’t monitor what you’re talking about which is their problem not yours. Just know it’s in your best interest to do all talking through PM if you want protection through reverb.

Yes.

They read your messages at will.

They no longer pay to have a phone number customer service department but pay employees to monitor all private messages which aren’t private at all, anytime they please. What a shady fucking company. I guess that’s what you get for a free platform. Oh wait.
