So I picked up an Analogman modded Phase 90 with internal volume trimpot and external mix knob...........

I have an original MXR script phase 90 for my early VH stuff but I often thought it seemed his phase 90 was a tad more subtle like more of the dry signal was mixed in for some reason. It was always rumored in the EVH lore in our METRO amp discussions that Jose tweaked Ed's Phase 90 ot make it more subtle and to boost the volume some for solos......... who really knows? Some time back a guy posted this clip and it caught my ear.

So I was watching Reverb for one and after missing a couple I found one, Merry Christmas to me.

I'm digging it..... if you roll the mix knob back it just gives it the right amount wet/dry mix and also gives the volume a bump over unity for solos pretty much like what you hear with Ed. I still love my original script but the mix knob is the bomb IMHO for the brand new ones for getting things dialed in just right.

This is not my video, just some dudes video on YT to give you an idea....

I've been wanting one of those. I'm using a Retrosonic which has a depth and level control and is TB and it does the chewy part but man its a tone-changer. Moreso than I recall a Phase 90 being.

My original MXR script is pretty subtle but I always thought it could be a bit more subtle. The mix knob really allows you to dial it in how strong(Wet) or subtle(Dry) you want it. The mix knob has detent setting straight up in the middle at 12 noon and that it supposed to be the 100% stock setting for the phase dry/wet mix. Turn it to the left and it gets drier and more of a volume bump for solos.

It hasn't disappointed me that's for sure.:2thumbsup:

He (Ed) said Jose modded his MXR pedals, it was in a Guitar Player interview. He never said what the mods actually were, just that they boosted gain and cut noise when he kicked them on.

So, is it a modded MXR, or does this Anagogmagog man build them from scratch ?

He takes the new MXR's script model and then he modifies them to whatever you want, True bypass switch, LED, 9V Boss power adapter, internal volume trimpot and or the Wet/Dry external mix knob. Any one of the mods or all of them.

Anything is possible...........:dunno:I do find it interesting that when you turn that mix knob back to a drier setting the volume increases much like how Ed described why he used the phase 90. I think he always said he liked to use it as a slight boost mostly.

I don't know if the original phase 90's had a mix trimpot on the actual circuit board but I would imagine they would have had one set to the factory setting and maybe Ed said to Jose this Phase 90 is too strong but I like it maybe Jose tweaked the internal mix pot and walla, less wet mix and a bit of volume bump for solo's.........................

Maybe some pedal guy can confirm or deny if the original script/block letter MXR had a wet/dry mix pot internally on the circuit board, if it does then the Jose mod could be a real possibility.

So by increasing or decreasing the wet and dry resistors values it is totally possible that Jose did this to Ed's pedal to do exactly what Ed said it did.....Interesting:unsure:

Dry and wet signals are passively mixed via a pair of 150kΩ resistors.

On the dry side use a SPST mini-switch that lifts one side of the 150kΩ resistor to create a vibrato effect.

For "mix" control, use a 120kΩ fixed resistor and a 250kΩ pot.

HD, don't get tempted to mess with that little trim-pot on the board.

If it's moved from the factory setting, it will not phase at all.

It prolly has a blob of solder (metal trim pot) or hot glue (plastic trim pot) on it anyways, to prevent such fuckery from occurring.

No, I don't intend to mess with either my old script or this one.

My point being is that Jose could have altered Ed's Phase 90 to have a slightly drier signal either adjusting the wet dry resistor values and or maybe an internal pot like analogman did with the external pot and the slight volume boost as a side effect of doing that.............

Now I have the "Jones" for one of these Analogman modded Phase 90s!!!

The EVH Phase has an internal trimpot you can adjust. Tiny increments or this one wont phase at all either, but its nice to be able to make the effect more pronounced or subtle.

I've always had the same problem with those being too prominent in the mix, but I solved it by using one of the "SAG" power taps off my Pedal Power2 Plus and I run the Phase 90 at about 7.8 volts instead of 9v.

Accomplishes the exact same thing.
