So a buddy of mine who trains at our gym has a kid learning guitar. He's super pumped and wants to graduate to electric! I'm always excited to share that enthusiasm and love it when kids get the bug....but I haven't bought a "beginner" electric in a while.

He wants a strat or a lp style guitar. top end of the budget is $400. What's good? Is squier\epi the default answer? What about the Harley Benton stuff? Any other brands he should look at?

I feel like a used PRS SE is one of best beginner deals out there and with some pickup upgrades, can be a killer guitar for anyone.

You want something cool enough to keep his interest.

1- no strat (dealing with a vibrato bar can be frustrating for nubes)
2- something with low action (so they aren’t fighting with it)

I think it’s a great idea to take him to Guitar Center or whatever local store you’re close to and let him try a few to see what catches his interest. Plus I think the excitement of seeing all the guitars and that process would be cool.

I would lean towards ESP and Schecter. Ibanez has been really shotty on their low end stuff largely. They just paid a bunch of YouTubers to pump up their entry level guitars to offset their quality issues. The owner of my local music store is learning to file fret ends to fix all the bad Ibanez guitars they got in. (Side note, that's why I shop local. They care.)

Korean made ESP LTDs, Schecters, and PRS SEs are where it's at, but it might push you over $500 a hair if you buy new. Buying used, on the other hand..

I would take a used PRS anyway! as a non-beginner guitar anyday!
