Anyone out there using a 12AT7 as a PI in their high gain amp?

i have one i meant to put in my DSL as its supposed to tame the gain but i never put it in

I have tried a 12AT7 and a 5751 in the PI of a RM100 and a 5150 50W EL34 head. In both it seemed to add a touch of clarity, but at the expense of something else that didn't like. Warmth maybe? It has been probably 5 years or more so can't really remember.

Thanks. What are you using now in your tube amps PI socket?

I always thought an AT7 or 5751 neutered an amp in the PI. Not a fan.. There's a couple tubes I like in the PI and thats the Sovtek LPS, sometimes a Mullard RI 12AX7 sounds good in the PI, as does the CV4004. Even a balanced JJ ECC83S.

I asked rick with wizard amps if putting a 12at7 might be a good idea. He said if the amp builder wanted one there, he would have put it. He let me know that despite what online forums would tell you, amp builders know better. We were talking about a wizard. I love my emails with him. He genuinely hates all my ideas.

I honestly don't think it's THAT great of an idea to put anything else but a 12AX7 on a circuit that was designed to have a 12AX7 in there.

Rather than more headroom, I would assume you'd just get less volume and either a darker or brighter tone than intended because of the resistance or impedance (don't know which is the right term here?) mismatch.
