Looking for another boost / over drive for my Marshall 2204 ....
and to probably do another short run of pedals ....
I tend to like building stuff that is rare .... priced way to high ...... or discontinued favorites .
suggestions ??
currently thinking of these ....

Vemuram TSV808
Fulltone OCD
Digitech Bad Monkey

I'm leaning more towards the TSV808 ..... I will put the clipping options , bass and saturation controls on the front of the pedal .

I've never tried an OCD ...

and I use to boost my crunch channel on my DSL way back ... with the monkey ... so I know how that will sound .

the only close second to my Chiron so far has been this EP Booster that I built with all the fixins ... super versatile ... sounds amazing

Have you tried a voodoo labs sparkle drive?

If you're into tube screamers with a gainy amp, it has by far the best clean blend out of anything I've tried, and you can snag them incredibly cheap

Other pedals I would recommend for boosting a 2203/2204 would be a TC integrated preamp, and a gray box dod 250 type circuit

just checked out the schematic for the sparkle drive .... it's basically a screamer but the circuit is setup like a Klon .. interesting

How about Landgraff Dynamic Overdrive.

It’s the flame colored pedal on the left.

The ‘other’ pedal that seems to be a Nashville session staple is the Ibanez Mostortion. I’ve never played one tho.

hmmmmm I can get boards for the Mostortion ..... not for the Landgraff though

OCD is an odd duck. Friend of mine has sworn by it for years as a boost so I’ve tried it in front of some amps including a 2203 and I personally didn’t like it. It doesn’t cut lows and add the kind of mids that push a Marshall’s preamp into gainier territory the way an SD-1 or TS does. It can actually add some ice pick sounding highs and even add more to the low end depending on how you set it, and its own gain character is kinda fuzzy sounding. It’s almost like an anti-tubescreamer.

I purchased a 1985 BOSS SD-1 (with box) and shipped it off to Analogman for the FROG mod.
Actually, probably shouldn't mention, but turnaround time was 8 days!!!

Sounds absolutely fantastic with my Metro 18 watt TMB and Metro JTM45.

Also have a Lightspeed, Barbershop, Mythical OD and Prince of Tone.
Even though I have drives, I don't really employ them.
But I'm really digging the SD-1 for my faux Marshall's...

I've sold off two OCD's and a v2 Timmy.

SD1/808/Silver mod

Our SILVER mod is also available on the SD-1/808, by customer demand. I thought the silver mod would be too expensive for this pedal but people really like the Boss pedals (they are more reliable than the Ibanez). FROG from Elderly Instruments was the 1st, as his TS9/Silver switches were failing too often, so he requested the SD-1/808/Silver. He likes them a lot, so we have been doing more silvers for other people. We now install a super bright GREEN LED for this FROG mod (looks cool too!!). I miss Frog, I used to hear from him every several months when his TS9 switches would die, now he never calls... but he did stop by our shop in the summer of '07 for a visit and the picture above. Here is a video of Frog at our shop with the pedal.

so he's just switching some values I think and most likely upgrading electrolytics ..... the SD-1 and 808 are so similar you can build either one using the same board ..
I don't think he's adding anything unless he's putting in a small perf board to attach to the main .
Not to crap on Mike at all ..... he's done a lot of cool stuff ..... but man ...... the " Mystique " makes this guy a lot of money ...
more power to him for creating that Mystique !

He told me in an email the topography was almost identical to the 808.
A difference being that BOSS owns the patent to asymmetrical (?) clipping and 808 is symmetrical (?).

the Barbershop is a weird one ..... I built one ....
also built a Greer LightSpeed ... I like the lightspeed alot .... not as much as my EP booster though ...
the Greer uses the same chip as I use in my 808 Screamer .... very hi fi ... and super clean / low noise

I don't know if you can have a patent on diodes clipping config .... but who knows ...
yes .... the SD-1 is Asymmetrical ... while the TS is Symmetrical ....
I'm in the process of designing some of my own SD-1 boards ... a lot of the guys in here want that option on a switch ... and different diode types ...
so I'm working that into the design

how about one of your dual pedals with say....a tsv808 on one side and a killer distortion on the other? Put the ole mushroom stamp in the middle.....call it the R.T.O.T.C. mushroomhead....because it's fed shit and kept in the dark....lol..

The Babershop is weird, I agree. But it sounds really cool.
To me, it has its own thing going on. Maybe its the Canadian part? I really like my Dr. Scientist Reverberator too, eh!
The Lightspeed, IMO, is the most transparent and amp like I have.
The POT I don't really care about. Hype purchase :loco:
Hype is what took me so long to ditch the Timmy.
The SD-1 is just checking all the boxes right now.

I totally could have misread the "patent"part.
