Indeed, there is certainly a large proportion of the membership that might participate in such discussions IMHO, if it weren't for "fear" of lowest-common-denominator, ad-hominem blowback.

How can many of these people want to talk about religion if not ONLY to use it as a point of angst and continual argument.

The way they call people names, play games with alts, continually be contrary for the sake of a perpetual argument/war and the list goes on.

This is NOT THE BEHAVIOUR of ANY individual who wants to talk religion.
