How can many of these people want to talk about religion if not ONLY to use it as a point of angst and continual argument.

The way they call people names, play games with alts, continually be contrary for the sake of a perpetual argument/war and the list goes on.

This is NOT THE BEHAVIOUR of ANY individual who wants to talk religion.

by and large the only times I've seen religion be brought up here is to explain one's disdain for homosexuality or why abortion should be illegal. And then the resulting vitriolic blowback from people who do not believe religion should affect US legislation. It comes from both sides

are you willing to accept that your religious views are not the same as everyone else? it's useless to talk about religion with anyone that cannot entertain that someone else's beliefs are just as valid to them as yours are to you. Religions are a belief system and not factual.

Christians, Jewish and Muslims all arguably worship the same God, but all have different interpretations of His word. Plus you have all of the other religions across the world with different gods. If your opening stance is "Christianity is true and everything else is false", then why would anyone want to further discuss the merits of a religion with you?

I see religious discussions taking 3 different paths
A) teaching (preaching) a religion to someone who is open to receive those teachings
B) argue with each other over who is right and who is wrong
C) speak "academically" about different religions with the intent to learn more about what someone else believes and why

for a discussion to actually work out, everyone involved in it has to be on the same page of which kind of discussion is being had. They can seamlessly be intertwined with each other as well. A becomes B if not all parties are willing to be "taught". A can become C if another person expresses their own teachings respectively. It's a tough balance to keep

Right now? Not any of them particularly. I was just responding to a post of yours stating that we hate when the Bible is quoted. That then turned in to my thoughts on discussing religion in general here
