I did try that. You gain like 3dB gain by doing it like that. Try recording DI's. Night and day difference.

But honestly, that applies to ALL pickups, LOL. EMG's are more sensitive, maybe, but even passives sound better when there is no tone in the circuit.

JMO.

Two of my emg guitars are volume only, they seem to have a little more bite and a little more immediate feel than with a tone pot

How about just converting your tone pot to a no-load pot? When the tone is on 10, The pot is completely out of the circuit, no additional resistance.

Best of both worlds.

Same with pickups like the Invader and x2n. More gain and clarity.

I have always taken the tone out. I have no need for a dark terrible sound

That's what I got going on with my 1988 Yamaha rgx612a, just one emg-81 and a volume pot, the other two single coil pickups are not connected to anything, they were stock actives. That's my favorite guitar.

You think this would be a good idea with a Seymour Duncan Distortion, or would that make it too bright? It's in a Ibanez LP copy. Or how about a JB?

It will basically strengthen the resonant-peak that a pickup already has. I don't think it really moves the peak upward on the spectrum.

If a pickup model already has a very "exaggerated" frequency-band then it could be too much, but then again our amps all have knobs also.

Same goes for using 1meg pot/s in place of standards.

Yes, it will make it brighter.
