Hammett On Beato

Kirk is an interesting one. Seems like a nice dude, but I can't put my finger on him. This interview only made it worse haha.

As folks have already said here, he sorta mailed in in after 1992. There is some cool, unique playing on those earlier albums. Then he retreated to the blues "box" shapes and safe pentatonic stuff. He's also surprisingly sloppy for a professional musician who lives playing the guitar. The Youtube videos where he has to re-start songs and fucks up solos. He also has the strangest stage presence where he's sorta look like he's constipated constantly. Would be interesting to hear someone with tight chops and solos take over for a live show once.
 
I love Kirk, old Metallica and Beato's interviews as of late.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to this interview.

But man, I can't believe how long and overall boring it was.
Not a lot of meat and potatoes type substance there.

It's actually the first interview Beato has done that really didn't capture my attention like the other interviews.
I found myself fiddling with my phone a bit.
Took three attempts to finish it...

It's unfair to put Kirk in the same sentence as Vai when Kirk can't even make it through a single sentence let alone riff without stuttering. Every criticism of Kirk in this thread may be legit. And yet even with all that said, I'd still rather crank some Metallica, old or new, rather than endure Vai wanking around on a chromatic scale.

I used to play all day every day 30 + years ago and then didn't touch a guitar for the next 17 years because other things just took over . I think the older players that haven't slowed down and are relentless in learning more are an extreme minority definitely not the norm .

Props to them for having that desire but for players who don't, thanks for the memories .

Most players don't slow down, just the ones that sit on the beach all day getting high do. You can tell by listening to Kirk talk that his brain is a few milliseconds behind.

And I'd rather crank any Vai Zappa album, DLR's Eat 'Em and Smile, Whitesnakes "Slip of The Tongue" or Vai's Passion and Warfare before any Metallica album. ?‍♂️ If you think Vai is just chromatic wanking, you're missing out on some really incredible and melodic music.

All this interview did was increase my WTF factor by about 4…lol
Beato, I’m sure, was pleased he landed a famous musician for his channel but he must have been bored as shit slogging through this thing. Keeping up his polite smile the whole time..lol.They could have wrapped up everything that was said in a cool 20 minutes. It still strikes me a little weird that a guy who could rip in the 80’s, and tastefully so, has devolved into what he has but he’s been devolved for far longer than he ripped, so it’s just kind of not unusual, as Mr. Jones would say.

I totally get his points about improvising and agree with most of them, but a metal band with very structured songs isn’t generally the place to start improvising solos. He talks in that interview about them making everything build in the song but the dude hasn’t built anything within a solo for quite some time now.

And funnily enough, my favorite Hammett solo is most certainly improvised (Outlaw Torn) but I don’t want to hear him do it on everything. That worked in that solo because the open space it was in and he still managed to build up to something in it.

And hell, Gilmour improvises all his solos too, “Comfortably Numb” is about 3 improvised solos that are just mixed together. Improvise all ya want, just make it have a point if you’re gonna leave it on a recorded song.

Lets not forget that Lars is the one since "Death Magnetic" that kinda decides what Solos will be in the Song. You can see that in the Making Of for example.

I also wish that Kirk would more sit down and really listenes to the Somg to find what the Song needs. I also think that Bob really knew how to push or guide Kirk when it came to solos.
 
Of all dudes to rip on for “wanking on a chromatic” scale and the dude picks the one guy that’s probably incorporated more scales and modes in his playing than any other popular guitarists. I’d be curious if there’s even one example of Vai playing anything chromatic at any point in his career. :ROFLMAO:
 
Never been a fan of Kirk's playing. But he seems genuinely grateful in his place. I give him props for that. I'm still a fan of Metallica nevertheless. The sum is definitely greater than the parts...
