What do you guys think of it? It's the closest I've found so far to certain characteristics I'm trying to hit myself with recording, but I don't want to say what those are just yet so that I don't prime you to hear what I say. Headphones or monitors recommended. I'm really curious to try using the techniques used in recording this album on something more along the lines of this forum's usual genres of interest. Really curious if you all hear a difference or not compared to most other recordings, and if you do what the differences you hear are.

Edit: Full playlist is at the bottom, but here are a couple songs linked directly for convenience. The mixes vary throughout the album, I think these three provide a decent idea of the variation and the first two have already been commented on before the edit.

its very dry and uncompressed. the vocals are too loud, the bass is a little pokey and the guitars could be a little brighter and popping more. it sounds ok in a raw unmixed kind of way but with a little help it could be a lot better.

edit: now this song albert and me came on as i was typing and this sounds closer to what i was envisioning the first OP song sounding like, this song sounds great

I definitely like the first song less from a mix perspective as well. Unfortunately the album is a little inconsistent that way.

This. Sounds like a live version with a lot of panning. Sounds good though.

Sounds like every part was recorded with a different mic, or recorded in a different room. Like left compared to right side for instance.

Is that with respect to the first song?

I love this. The drums are sitting so back in the room, without sounding affected.

The singer is an artist. The guitar/banjo players are so deep in the pocket, you can't even fish them out to pay the wendy's bitch.

Meant to reply sooner, but have been busy between projects and school. One of the things I liked about this album, and largely what prompted me to post it, is because to me it seems to get closer to the experience of a live performance, including a greater sense of stereo sound. The album was recorded with a stereo recording setup as detailed in this and the follow-up article: https://www.barrydiamentaudio.com/recording1.htm. When I originally posted I had just come up from the rabbit hole of stereo recording techniques, and thought it was neat to finally find a known example showing how it sounded. According to the articles, the album was recorded with a single stereo mic pair in a room. Mixing and stereo placement was done by literally placing the instrumentalists or sample playback speakers at different points in the room relative to the stereo pair, if I understand correctly.

I don’t give a shit about the mix. Albert and Me is a pretty good tune
