Want to get a delay pedal as part of GC used 10% off but to meet $499 I have to spend about $300 more and for the life of me I’m striking out big time on something I need or want. I thought maybe a 2 Channel mic pre and/or compressors but I got lost in the rabbit hole of decision making on what is actually a benefit against what I have already. What the fuck is cool for about $300?

gc inflated their used prices by 30 percent since 2019.. I would hold off and find something new at the same or better price.. then spend the rest on groceries

I find GC consistently has got a better deal than Reverb and/or eBay and just comparing to the new price you can judge it. Plus I didn’t realize the sky was falling over $300. Fuck this thread. It was meant to be a fun discussion of what’s out there, not worrying about the apocalypse.
Japetus, you’re a MOD. Send this whole thing into the corn field.

99% of what I buy used is from GC.
Its no worry, no hassle buying.
If its shit, it gets taken back no questions asked.

If I pay a little extra, it's for convenience...

300$? Find a Lawrence Petross MIAB pedal, they're amazing. Or a Strymon volante, they're amazing.

Or a set of really nice pickups.

Recording software? 300$ can get you a bunch of stuff. SSL drumstrip is fantastic, Scheps Omni strip is fantastic, the waves 1176 is fantastic.

Mic stands. An extra 57 and a fredman clip.

Some combination of the above.

A speaker or pair of speakers you don't normally have or use? I am generally in the celestion zone so for me it would be 12Ls or Fanes or something.

Software is a no go because it has to be used items. i already have a few 57’s, otherwise good suggestion. I’ve always wanted to try a BD M160 ribbon but they don’t have a used one. I have so much Marshall type tone going on with amps MIAB pedals are superfluous to me. The Volante looks cool but that would be getting two delay pedals. The goal is to supplement the difference of the delay pedal I’ve already chosen. I’m set for pickups in the guitars I have. I was really torn on Mic pre choices so might get a few of them and return the losers?

Why a mic pre in that range? ?

I promise I'm not trying to be an ass, but I've done a ton of recording and even worked in studios before, and IMO hardware mic pres aren't remotely worth it at that price point. Especially for recording guitar.

Once you get into the Uber-expensive zone, yeah, definitely they can be worth it.

But the lowest price point of a mic pre that would even be an improvement over the average project studio interface (or analog mixer) would be like the 500 series API 512 or warm audio WA73, and those are around the 700-800$ range IIRC.

It just seems like you've convinced yourself that a super budget mic pre is gonna make this huge difference in your recordings, and I can promise you, it's not. ?

Edit: a nice ribbon microphone or another auxiliary mic that you don't already have - a 421? Sm7? Seems like it would be a vastly superior expenditure of funds, as far as dollars to usefulness goes

I’ve actually been looking at all price ranges of mic pre’s hence my rabbit hole comment earlier. I’m not hard set on it being a budget one at all. But ultimately just wanted to have a fun purchase of a delay pedal and finagle the deal with getting the total near the required 499. Was actually looking at a used WA12 (would do two), Tonebeast or even their WA412 (like the 1 rack space idea). Not sure the Neve style is what I need with the music I tend to record. Was also looking at the Art MPA II as it at least had an option to run at a decent voltage on the tube And it did fare well in a few video’s I saw vs. a Scarlett which is my interface. Already have a 421.

Okay, I assumed because you said 300$ you meant mic pres in that range - which, honestly, they are mostly junk

If you're going to grab a mic pre, I would go for something higher end than the 300$ price point or it's basically a waste of money

Sometimes I’m secretly relieved when I see something has disappeared from my Wish List…?
I know the feeling .... after I talked myself out of a few guitars ... I started looking for cool / rare pedals ( to me anyway ) trying to hit the 499.00 mark .... lol ...... bastards

Agreed. Cheap mic pres are noisy junk. Pretty much all cheap outboard gear has a high noise floor that's unusable for anything serious. I've thrown a couple cheap pre's and compressors away in my time.
