Best home defense weapon - no gun

Home security goes through my mind a lot these days. I live on a lonely stretch of road in the country but crime is moving further from the cities and will eventually be here.
I play the chain of events in my head: hear a break-In downstairs and my Glock with laser sight is in a case beside the bed. I can open the case quietly but loading a clip and chambering a round, no way. The stairs are immediately outside my door and I can look at the downstairs door while swinging the Glock around to take aim. If the door is open and perp isn’t armed, the red dot on his chest should do the trick. If he is armed, it’s a matter of squeezing off shots before he does and be ready for a life changing event.
This scenario plays through my mind a lot as I get older.
I have a neighbor up the road from me that had 4 mexicans storm the front door and beat the shit out of him in front of his wife and 2 kids before taking whatever they could find while they were held at gunpoint. He had a loaded 870 pump shotgun in his closet, but could not get to it in time.
The same 4 broke into a former Special Forces guys house 3 miles away a week later and he killed 3 of them and badly wounded the 4th, so karma ultimately caught up to them, but honestly, unless you have kids in the house, that weapon should be sitting on GO at all times. The difference in those 2 scenario's was the Special Forces guy had weapons locked and loaded in multiple places in the house, so no matter where he was in the house when the shit hit the fan, he had something close by to deal with it. I spoke with him after it happened and he said he had to get 2 of them shooting through walls with his AR, and he thinks he got lucky on those hits. One he got square up in a doorway, and the wounded one he hit in the knee, the thigh and the shoulder but the guy survived. 3 of them were armed, the other had a big bag to stuff things into. We didn't have any more problems with that, its been 4-5 years ago. But you never know. He kinda laughed it off and said how rusty he had gotten since coming back from his last deployment...
It sux that things are the way they are, but this is what we have at the moment. When shit goes sideways it happens in a split second and you don't ever want to be found with a less than effective strategy. Plan on there being 5 of them, not one. There are probably more occurrences with multiple shitheads involved than there are with one, although each time its happened to me there was only one guy.
This is one reason you want high capacity mags and not those dam 10 round jokes they have made law in certain states. Lasers are great, but red dots are faster, especially with multiple targets that are moving. Red dots with shake-awake can be sitting on GO until the second you grab it so you save time not having to turn it on. But whatever you have, train with it. Do it often.. Do it like your life or your families lives depend on it.

It sounds like its stupid paranoid overkill if nothing has ever happened, but you don't want to wish you were better prepared when you hear the door get kicked it or a window smashed while you are asleep. If you have to go hot with those fuckers, you want to be the baddest son of a bitch they have ever seen and know exactly what your gonna do while they are trying to figure out where to go once inside..
Hopefully it never happens. Normal sane people don't want to shoot anyone and lots of them don't waste time thinking about stuff that probably won't happen, it only happens to other people on the news.
But its on the news every day..

Oh, and never try to chamber a round quietly, the gun could jam.. Do it with purpose :D
While it’s true chambering a round shouldn’t be done gently, chambering a round after the shit hits the fan is pointless and only serves to give away your position. Anyone who thinks racking that shotgun is all it takes to scare someone off is an idiot ( to be clear I’m not suggesting you said this). The moral of the story, keep your guns fully loaded including the chamber.

Totally agree about dots over lasers by the way. I do have a Viridian HS1 on an AR pistol though that’s meant for HD. Lasers are all but useless past 20’ outdoors in the sunlight.

concerning shotguns...you still have to aim. Even with double XX buck and a full choke the myth of not having to aim is a myth. I did not start seeing spread until about 20-25 yards or so. It will blow pieces of people off and destroy them so there is that. Just thought I would share that. I wish I had my range pictures to show you all. On my old phone. There's a reason why the germans hated them in WWI.

I'm a condition 3 guy. No hot weapons. Kids and grandkids worry me to much. I have 4 ar's in condition 3 24/7 and about 60 loaded 30 round mags. 10 in my ammo carrier and an ammo box stuffed full...plus more. Two pistols in my nightstand unloaded but the mags are there. Other weapons in other places. Gun cabinet in the back of the house with more goodies. All I have to do is grab one and charge it and it's go time. My bump in the night one has a light and a shake awake sig dot. Also has a medieval muzzle brake as well. In case I need to poke a mofo.

I get that completely. When my daughter was still living with us, we had a very clear understanding of never touching any weapons in the house unless I was not there and you thought you were in danger. And she could handle herself well for defensive stuff. She had shot since she was 5. But in reality, it was easier for her because teenage girls have little interest in weapons, but boys are an entirely different thing. At the same age they can't wait to get their hands on them. Not for nefarious reasons, just starting out shooting cans or other stuff we all did. It was fun.
It just seemed to be built into us..
The world is a different place now

I get it.

I was raised in a house full of guns. I got my first shotgun at 8, stepped up to a 12 gauge at 10 and the old man bought me my first 1911 at 14. I always knew where they were and they were always loaded. The thought of doing something stupid with them never crossed my mind. My old man would have had my ass and that's scary. I raised my daughter the same way. She's 32 now. She likes shooting, she is trained well above an average CCW and usually has a 9mm on her somewhere.

I don't like to talk about any particulars on the interwebs, but I'm not in danger of not being able to get to anything in time.

I suggest a home defense wand. This one is very old.

Clint is the man. I tried to get the woman to let me go out there for one of his classes. It's probably not going to happen unless I hit the lottery.
I am fortunate to train and have trained with a lot of great guys though on various platforms, but shotguns are my first love. I was wing shooting over English pointers before I was 9 and I took my first "Tactical" shotgun class before I was old enough to drive.

My main guy these days is a retired 20 year combat Marine instructor and until recently he was a 20 year police captain/instructor in one of the shittiest neighborhoods St. Louis has to offer. I traded him a lot of guitar lessons for shotgun, and defensive handgun courses. :)

I also got some cool cop schwag. Like a few of those auto locking shotgun/AR racks that sit in the front of police cruisers.

What neighborhood in STL?

I spent 9 years working all over north city. Been shot at and over too many times to count. These days the worst I have to face is a pissed off housewife in Ballwin. lol

Black Jack
Black Jack is not that bad. I grew up in Bissell Hills, went to Riverview. The "worst" is Castlepoint (I still go eat at White Barn) and Dellwood, and Glasgow. The north side just moved more to the North.

It's all pretty bad now dude. Bellefontaine Neighbors, Baden, Walnut Park, Pine Lawn, College Hill. Fuck even midtown around SLU is a shithole.

My best friend and my laborer were shot to death near Hodiamont and Page. Couple blocks from the loop.

I went to Danforth, which is on city lines..Baden. It was never nice but it's ghoulish now. It makes me sad.

I was doing a job in Walnut Park. Broad daylight some dude comes running out of an alley. Another dude chasing him shooting. Hits the dude, dude falls, other dude walks up to him and puts about 6 or 7 more in him then calmly walks back through the alley he came out of. Took almost an hour for cops to show up.

My buddy grew up in Spanish Lake. It used to be decent. Bunch of those people go back to the park once a year for "Laker Day".
